How the heck do I replace the rubber part of a tail cap? Am I just supposed to gently pull it out? I tried gently pulling at it with pliers but I don't want to damage the switch or tail cap. This has to be easy and I feel like moron for not being able to figure it out.

First we need to know what light (model) needs replacing of tail cap and perhaps some pictures.

Depends on the light.

Generally you unscrew the switch module from the tailcap since the rubber boot is being compressed by the switch and the tailcap.

Variations include a retaining ring on the outside of the tailcap.

depends on the light

but usually you take tail off and unscrew the switch assembly from the inside
