Being ignorant, impatient and not greatly impressed with several other lights with the XM-L emitter I ordered the X-Thrower with a SST-50 emitter. Seems good but these long days are making it tough to compare.....

XM-L version will get you higher output and increased throw.
SST-50 has been rendered obsolete with the introduction of XM-L. The latter is capable of higher output than the former due to higher efficiency, not to mention being easier to focus due to smaller size and, thus, translating to increased throw.
