Long term effects of running NIMH in x21?

Is it really that bad to run nimh cells in my x21 if its just basically for shock factor and not extended run times... Is the only dangerous side effect the lack of heat sinking or is the extra current immediately bad for the xre's. I just can't take them out now that I've seen how bright it is with them. Has anyone been using this set up in the long term?

I have just put 4 D-Cell NiMH batteries (900mAh) in my X21. It is not SUPER bright. I run it only for short bursts so overheating is not a problem. I would not emagine any long-term damage is done. If the LEDs can handle the current for 30 seconds no reason why they cant handle the current for longer. As long as overheating is not the result.
