Battle in the woods is about battle between the best compact led throwers vs the best compact HIDs.
It's a practical battle for supremacy of illumination of the cold dark woods. It's about throw but not completed about throw, as the spot size matters
Large dies were chosen for high lumen & big spot size. Smaller dies such as XPG-2 or de-domed XML were not used. Although they might be easier to achieve throw than the bigger dies, the much smaller beam spot reduces illumination coverage & thus not as useful as a searchlight in the woods.
I find even XML with dome produce too small of a spot in a 3" SMO reflector, it lost to HID even though the throw was higher (See Battle in the woods I). Thus, the the round III, much efforts were put into high current SBT-90 builds...

Previous battles:

II: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?338821-Battle-in-the-…

The Foxes won both previous battles. However, there are some new elephants in town, it's time for another round of battle.

The battle ground:
My back yard, twin skinny trees target 250 feet , the single big tree to the right of them is at 200 ft.
Photo Conditions: all are Manual Exposure: ISO 200: F3.3: 1 second exposure

While doing the beam shots, I also did 100 feet (30.5 meter) lux measurements out door.
Outdoor lux measured @ 30.5 meters under slight rain, saturated humidity, most numbers 5-10% lower than indoor 10 meter lux.

Last photo shows the lux meter placed at 100 ft out, Extech EZ30 meter. This is an excellent meter, the peak hold function is super useful,
allows long distance lux measurement to be done by a single person, without the need for a helper.

Thanks!

Did you ever purchase a CBT-90?

The new SBT-70 and CBT-140 also starts to show up on Muser & Avnet, I am tempted to try one,
The CBT-140 has a 14mm round die, bigger thanCBT-90 with max current spec of 21Amp & can get up to over 4000 lumens. But How the heck would one provide 21Amp in a contact package? Need a nuclear battery?

Mouser Part #:

896-CBT14WCSC15TB123
Manufacturer Part #:
[h=1]CBT-140-WCS-C15-TB123[/h]
Manufacturer: [h=2]Luminus Devices
[/h]
Description:
LED Lighting Modules Cool White, 7000K 3680lm, 21A, Round

The 57K version has high CRI of 90. That's quite amazing.

Not yet, have an other project to finish first :). Indeed noticed the 140 at mouser. I had the exact same thing: how to supply the current. Subc cells certainly can. But I do not have a switch which can handle the current.

Something to think about the next month :).
