I finally got my TN31mb in yesterday. Had to get it out, so we rounded up the big boys and headed for out for our favorite park. We brought the TN31mb, TN31 (stock), SR90 (dedomed), BTU U2, TK75, and the SRK for the heck of it. From our own testing these lights posted -
SR90 (dedomed) – 195K
TN31mb – 436k
TN31 – 126k
SRK – 25k
BTU – 125K
TK75 – 95k
We did all the beamshots at 300m. One shot done at full distance and the other zoomed in a good amount.
Now we tried to get the exposure correct. The zoomed shots are slightly under exposed. But the distance shots are pretty close to what we saw. Maybe just slightly over exposed. We tried with two different cameras and these were the best of the group. Good for comparisons sakes I think at a minimum. And no the TN31mb isn't quite that yellow – More of a neutral beam in person. But it is the yellowish/neutralist of the group for sure. The rest of the colors looked pretty close to correct. Unfortunately downsizing them to fit the forum limits deteriorated the images a bit, but I guess they are ok.
Oh, and the target is a 12ft x 8ft tarp.
So first for the 300m non zoomed shots –

Now the zoomed in shots. Again these are a little under exposed. We seem to have a hard time getting the zoomed shots to show enough light with either camera. They were brighter in person. But here they are -

Unnecessary use of long quote when quoted post is two posts up. Quote removed.-Bill

Perfect! Thanks so much for this! Really captures the varies characteristics of the lights. I ordered mine a short time ago. Invoice ID: 0000001262. It looks like the Tn31mb is a great thrower :twothumbs

They are pretty impressive. And the other cool thing I found out last night is the it also have respectable lumen output. I tested it at 741otf at 30sec. So with the selector ring turned down to low and medium levels, you can actually use the light with a fair amount a spill, all without blinding yourself with the spot. Just keep it off the higher power levels.
This light throws so good that it could hit the 300m target on only its 2nd power level. And it still has 4 more to go.

Apart from the obvious changes to the beam profile and output are there any changes that can be felt or seen compared to the standard TN31?

Great shots as always, thank you!

How does the TN31mb hotspot size compare to the stock TN31 at intermediate distances, say 50 yards?

Nope. Both lights look identical and operate identical. From the outside you have to look at the LED's to tell which is which. Now the battery carrier har the coating stripped on the TN31mb, so you can see that visual difference.

The TN31mb's spot is roughly 1/2 the size of the stock TN31. They are a little hard to measure, but we did both today at about 15m, which is about 50ft. At that distance the stock TN31 has a spot of appx. 24". The TN31mb was only about 12". Not sure if that ratio continues, but at that distance that's about what they are. I can do some side by side wall spots if desired.

VERY nice job on the beam shots!

I like how the tight beams don't show the corridor of trees, but the floods show them clearly...which, despite the small target itself, gives a much better sense of where the lights send all those lumens out to...other than for throw, etc.

The DEFT-X and the TN31mb have the same 1.4º beam angles...

So, the beam spread for the TN31mb above, should be ~ what you see with a DEFT-X too.

Exactly what I needed! Side by side beamshots would rock my small world!
You consistently post some of the most informative beamshots of the most relevant lights (to me anyway), Thanks!

Just did a few more simple beamshots on the TN31mb vs the TN31. These are just with my iphone, but they seem ok.

First one inside at about 3m -

Outside at about 19m -

Thanks for these beamshots and all your work. It is a great contribution to CPF as many are interested in these lights, particularly the TN31mb. I ordered one on January 1st and should have it tomorrow. I am also really glad to see that the beam does appear to be neutral white because I hate cool white. I didn't know if saabluster was saying the light had a neutral tint because he used a neutral white LED or if it was a result of dedoming. In any case, it is clearly more neutral than your other lights which is great in my opinion.

That's kind of funny. The tint is the only thing I don't like about the TN31mb. I much prefer cool white in throwers. But dedoming does that. And I'm ok with the tint considering what an awesome light it is.
