Make it. Most of the unknowns are now knowns, so it's basically a demonstration of resources. And national pride would be at stake. Just imagine an effort like the previous Olympics, magnified 100x.
They need only cash in a small % of even their US investments to afford the best people in the world, leading an army of people to put it all together. The only question is would there be enough will power, sans competition (aka Sputnik).

Discussion of current affairs and such are, of course, fine and encouraged. The addition of controversy through a poll regarding governmental conspiratorial opinion is activity we prefer to see addressed on CPF's Underground board.

I personally hope they make it. A "friendly" space race between the US and China can only help both countries via technologies spinned off from the space program. Incidentally, had we kept on pace after the lunar landings the plan was to have a lunar base by the mid 1980s, a Mars landing in the early 1990s, and a Mars base by roughly 2000. By 2013 we probably would have had manned missions to Jupiter or Saturn. It's a pity we stopped after the first lunar landings.
