LED efficiency and performance progression is still going strong. 6-12 months after a flashlight purchase, you can bet there's a better emitter/driver combo being offered by the same maker.

Well, after a couple of years, you can end up scoring some pretty decent deals on used older model flashlights that have fallen out of favor. But some of them are dead ends -- either they're too impractical to modify for the cost/result ratio, or the driver won't be up to the task of driving a newer LED sufficiently to be worth replacing.

So I'm wondering... what are some "sleeper" LED lights out there worth getting? Very good quality and decently designed lights that are now languishing with weaker emitters but would be easy and effective candidates for an emitter upgrade?
