I don't think it can remain uncommented on in CPF, the forum interested in the nature of sight: "Brain Games" on National Geographic.

While this show won't make you a better hiker, camper, or night reader. It will help with inspection, reliance on own perception, and observation. I think it knocked my wife a little off her high horse of self assured opinions. (She is a freak of nature--I know no one better than she at Boggle, Where's Waldo, Etc. Ironic, really, considering my recognition of the importance of regular fovea use.) "Brain Games" may change which light you choose. But I won't now comment on which lights the National Geographic series recommends.

I am not seeing too many links to the online sources of the show, "Brain Games". (We watch on dvr.)

I've seen the ads for it, and it looked interesting...but I have not actually had time to watch any TV lately. Back in the '70's, I was involved in research that included optical illusions and the brain's perception of its environment based on learned context, and some of what I saw in the ads reminded me of the same principles.

One of my favorite experiments back then involved the way tribal peoples who's culture did not include right angles, every thing was rounded...so they had never seen a square or rectangle shaped object like a window or a door. When shown a house with windows or walls, etc, made with one side taller than the other, etc...most of us interpret the smaller side to be further away, and the larger side to be closer, and mentally "Square" it - based on the assumption that its a window, so it must be a square or rectangle, etc.

When a person walks past these objects, the PERSON appear to shrink or grow, rather than the building features being misproportioned. (Because we interpret larger as closer, so if the person is coming towards us, we expect them to appear progressively larger, etc...and conversely, if we see railroad tracks, the distance between the rails appear to get progressively closer together (Smaller) as they get progressively further away) - but if you make the rails get WIDER as they are further away, we perceive the end of the tracks to be closer, and so forth.)

A person from the "Square-less" society doesn't see that illusion, they just see a box that's larger on one side than the other, etc....and the person staying the same size.

The last episide I watched made me feel slight remorse that I chose my wife using only my periphery vision. The bride's maids threw me off. I think that is their chief purpose.--Just kidding, Honey.
