Carclo P60 optics + beams. Quad XP-G2/219 Reference quality tint comparisons.

SureFire C2 is the host. Carclo Plain Tight Array (10621) and the Carclo Plain Spot Array (10622) are utilized.

Note: Refer to this diagram for what's ahead. Also if your display or display card shows colors in the "thousands of colors" range you may see unnatural rainbow-like rings and color banding in the photos. Everything should appear smooth with "millions of colors".

The next 2 photos give a general idea of the beam shapes for each lens type using a quad Nichia 219 dropin.

~1,100 lumens -- Quad Nichia 219 [SW45-B10] + Carclo Plain Tight Array (10621) @ 5 Feet.

The picture frame is 20" across. The 2 photo's are about 1 stop over exposed at the center and 2 stops under exposed at the edges (ahhh the quirks of today's digital cameras). White balance is manually adjusted for each incidence to appear as close to the eye as possible.

~1,100 lumens -- Quad Nichia 219 [SW45-B10] + Carclo Plain Spot Array (10622) @ 5 Feet.

a9meqd.jpg

The following 3rd wall shot shows the Carclo Plain Spot Array (10622) on a quad XP-G2 (R5-3C BIN). Note that the beam shape from the quad XP-G2 is tight similar to the Nichia 219's 10621. The XP-G2's emitter dome apparently creates a different radiation angle than the 219 translating into a focused hotspot. I didn't do a 10621 test for the XP-G2 due to the current 10622 being bonded. But from past experience with another XPG quad, the beam shape is a bit tighter than this and outside my personal preferences. The 10622 works so much better (for the XPG) and has a good amount of flood.

~1,700 lumens -- Quad XP-G2 [R5-3C] + Carclo Plain Spot Array (10622) @ 5 Feet.

Note: Because of the intensity of the quad XP-G2's the photo is about 2 stops over exposed at the center and 2 stops under exposed at the edges.

ke7rqv.jpg

The following are tint comparisons between a neutral XP-G2 R5-3C BIN (possibly the XP-G2's best tint IMO) and the Nichia 219 (SW45B10 BIN) both using only the 10622 optic. As we'll see, no two tints are alike. Where the XP-G2 trumps the Nichia 219 in output, the 219 makes up for it with better color rendering.

These are reference quality photo's. They have been painstakingly adjusted to be accurate. They are very close in tonality and exposure. Depending on your display calibration, what you are seeing is probably how it would appear to you in person.

~400 lumens -- Quad Nichia 219 [SW45-B10] + Carclo Plain Spot Array (10622) @ 4 Feet.

As shown with the hand shots, the Nichia 219 really renders flesh tones very nicely.

I'm going to be adding outdoor beam shots with foliage and stuff later as well. Will have to bring the ultrabook to calibrate images then and there. :D

Re: Carclo dropin optics + beamshots. XP-G2 vs 219 Reference quality tint comparisons

oh this is awesome!
+1 thanks for doing this!

As I scrolled down, tints from the beamshots seemed very similar until I saw the hands.
I've noticed the 219/119 HRCI will look only slightly better in color at times to Cree neutrals.
They (219/119) however will stand out in great color rendition with things like skin, wood furniture, certain foods, oil paintings and other odd things.

Kudos to you for the hands comparison to show the difference!

There's also a stark difference in the pennies, quarters, stainless chain (less yellow more 'silver') and polished stones of the bracelet. Browns really pop as well. Anything with natural earth tones tend to look better.

A quality IPS LCD display really shows the differences.

Re: Carclo dropin optics + beamshots. XP-G2 vs 219 Reference quality tint comparisons

Some updated reference quality shots with two new BIN's. I like a tighter beam so I switched the dropins to the Carclo 10621 Plain Tight Array. The only draw back is a slightly squarer beam pattern with the XP-G2's. The Nichia 219 is still nice and round. Don't have a new shot here with the brighter R5-3C it's sold.

The R4 XP-G2's are approx 7% less bright than the R5, but I appreciate the better color rendering. You'll see the ANSI white curve runs nearly straight through the middle of [5C].

k0mr5x.jpg

For some odd reason, the R4-5B seems to be subdued (I estimate 1,300 lumens) and has a more olive tint compared to the R4-5C (1,600 lumens) which is more halogen like. I can't describe the 5C any better than "halogen", because the tint is neither rose, nor purple, nor green. It's really a shade of amber like halogen.

Hand shots with updated XP-G2 BIN comparisons 5B and 5C

Just for fun I added a shot with the Cool White XM-L2 U2 EagleTac TX25C2 (unknown bin)

1st -
Nichia 219 [SW45-B10]
2nd -
XP-G2 [R5-3C]

The 5C has really grown on me. Not only does it render decently but it outpowers the Nichia 219 at the upper end by a good margin.

Re: Carclo dropin optics + beamshots. XP-G2 vs 219 Reference quality tint comparisons

Thanks for these comparison shots. I'll have to attest to the accuracy of the photos. What I see here is nearly identical as to what I see with my nichia and xpg2 setups. The R4-5C is REALLY nice! It's about as close to the Nichia's as you're going to get.

On a side note, and I don't know if this is even possible, it would be interesting to see if Kenji could make a quad using XP-E R3 4D0. I have a triple from Oveready that uses those leds and the tightness of the beam along with the tint makes it a very nice multi led setup. The tint reminds me very much of the xpg2 r4-5c.

He uses mounted prefabs but I guess one can ask him if he has experience with reflow soldering emitters. Wonder what the beam pattern would be like :D

I think on Friday I'll have backyard beamshots showing green and brown stuff.

Re: Carclo dropin optics + beamshots. XP-G2 vs 219 Reference quality tint comparisons

A few more pics with makeshift piles of shirt "snow". I added a shot with the Malkoff M61WLL as well. Was curious how the tints would look on piles of white things. So here it is. Distance about 3 feet.

There are some unnaturally occurring color highlights on a few shirt edges and some color banding in the beam spill which aren't there in person. Otherwise these are all mostly reference quality.

1st - Nichia 219 [SW45-B10]
2nd - XP-G2 [R4-5C]
3rd - XP-G2 [R4-5B]
4th - Malkoff M61WLL

5th - XM-L2 U2 EagleTac TX25C2

You can especially see the difference in beam shape between the Carclo 10622 (Nichia 219) and the 10621 (XP-G2 R4-5C) which has a squarer hot spot.

I was surprised that the Nichia 219 light seemed too pure for even "snow". The XP-G2 R4-5C actually felt better.

these are, without a doubt, the best comparison beamshots ever.

Adding one more indoor set before I shoot outdoors this time adding a new Kerberos Quad XP-G2 [R5-1C]

xkrg2w.jpg

1st - XP-G2 [R5-1C]
2st - Nichia 219 [SW45-B10]
3rd - XP-G2 [R4-5C]
4th - XP-G2 [R4-5B]
5th - Malkoff M61WLL

6th - XM-L2 U2 EagleTac TX25C2

As usual these are mostly reference quality samples. There is slight underexposure by about 1 stop at the fringes (for the Malkoff and EagleTac) and slight overexposure by about 1 stop for all beams on the imitation plant and white berries. Distance about 1' from the plant.

Note there is green back scatter off the leaves onto surrounding areas. Not every light is the same optic.

All quads shooting from the side using med modes, EagleTac on med 208 lumens, Malkoff M61LL on default 70 lumens.

I'm undecided about the cool white R5-1C. It looks like a floody version of the EagleTac TX25C2 except it's a notch warmer, no green tint --at all-- in the spill and a much lighter purple fringe. I was actually hoping for some green but I can only detect it at lower current levels. Thought it would make a cool winter snow drama light with some light blues, greens, yellow and purple getting enhanced separation through the optics. Nope. It's a creamy cool-white-lovers dream instead. =\ (I prefer neutrals if otherwise)

By far my #1 LED for general use is the hi-cri Nichia 219, with the higher output XP-G2 [R4-5C] getting a well deserved #2.

Did a photo run with a closer take on some vegetation, in this case a very realistic artificial tree. :D I wanted to simulate on a miniature scale what it might be like with the source light shining through breaks in foliage and onto terra firma with shadows.

The setup

65zltc.jpg

Distance from camera about 4"

1st - XP-G2 [R5-1C]
2st - Nichia 219 [SW45-B10]
3rd - XP-G2 [R4-5C]
4th - XP-G2 [R4-5B]
5th - Malkoff M61WLL

6th - XM-L2 U2 EagleTac TX25C2

These photo samples like the others have been painstakingly adjusted and are reference quality.

I was surprised the olive tinted R4-5B seems to work pretty nicely with natural earth tones. Will probably look great with fall foliage :D

Going to post 11 place card posts to bump over to the second page.

Don't want to crash anyone browsers by having too many photo's and animated GIF's on one page.
