Walking onions...

A friend is going to get me some walking onion bulbs and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with them. Do they need to be pulled and brought inside in the winter or are they ok to be left in the ground? How large do they get? Are they mild or hot? My mother-in-law has grown potato onions but has no experience with this other multiplier onion.

Thanks,
Barry
