I was just reading the news about the UPS plane that went down today in Alabama - not sure what the cause is yet.

But toward the end of the article, they mentioned a UPS plane crashed in 2010 due to a fire caused by the 80,000-90,000 Li-Ion cells in its cargo. 80,000-90,000 cells?!?!

Wow, that's a lot of cells. But battery suppliers should know better than the send them air post. The changes that occur at those altitudes are insane.

I was wondering if protected li ion cells, or protected and drained li ion cells would be safe for any mailing.I know discharging under 2.5 volt is hard on cell. But could this not be overcome with some method of recovery?
