Reading nightvisionforumuk.com I discovered a proven concept: Uniquefire T20 in combination with Osram Oslon Black 840nm led.
I used the 109-led flashlighthead to fit a 3 inch aspheric lens to focus the light.
I bought the threaded drop-in's from Vakeiros on nightvisionforumuk.com.
He made me an Oslon infrared and a Cree XR-E white pill.
I defocussed the light a little to become a wider beam to make the light more usefull over full throw with narrow beam.
The night vision device is a monocular based on PVS-5 Gen2 image intensifier tube, without any magnification.

that looks really cool!

Thx. And that was only a Gen2 image intensifier...
In real and on high resolution photo it was like having a beamshot of IR rays going for hundreds of metres.
Pretty awesome. Those Oslon's are really great. With proper mounting I've heard some run them on 1,5 Amps but thats pushing them.

In the pics that you don't see a IR hotspot (smaller circle of IR illumination) is it because you're using the night vision without the IR flashlight, or because you zoomed out the flashlight? Do you know roughly what it would look like with the flashlight but without the night vision (just with a camcorder that doesnt have a IR cut filter).

For your T20 IR, white & red what would be the widest beam angle available? (fully defocussed). Fully defocussed could you get anywhere close to 700 meters of throw like the armkytek barracuda ?

How easy/fast is it to swap between the IR pill and the red CREE XR-E pill?

Don't expect to much of the zoom function. It is not full zoom, see it more as adjusting beam intensity and hotspots.
For a 'normal' camera with raised sensitivity for IR, the objects closer by will catch more IR and that will show up purple-ish in the image.
I do not know the light Armkytek barracuda but specifications are hugely inflated.
By all means, see if you can find a secondhand Maxa Beam with IR-filter. Anything less will dissapoint you for that range of 700m.

That bouncing back seems like a significant problem. I guess there is no way around it except distance the lighting source from the camera locations? Or maybe get a IR-corrected objective lens.

Have you tried some sort of multi-LED panel (like the 10° 240'/73m 10oz IP67 (12-36)VDC 8W Axton i posted about at http://nightvisionforumuk.com/viewtopic.php?p=63829#p63829 )

also do you have pics of how you mount your camera behind your gen2 NVD?
