I built a Jayrob Flashlight a year or two back, I had a bad contact that disabled the light for a bit. But now that I have it fixed the flashlight still cycles thru modes (High, Med, Low) BUT it is so dim that the dye is maybe a candle power or so. Can the LED be direct driven to test if the driver is bad?

Dont see why not? Max Fv is 3.5 vdc so a couple AAA alkaline cells would work. I dont even think you need to use a load resistor. But it couldnt hurt to start out with one in circuit just to see. Half a watt if you got one laying around.

clean all your contact surfaces really well. Things like where the tailcap connects to the body, and where the body connects to the light engine will be places where residue can introduce resistance into the circuit.
