Anybody\'s Arc AAA die this way?

I gave my nephew an ArcAAA for Christmas last year. It worked for awhile and then died suddenly, the circumstances of it's death unclear to me. From looking at it, the foam retainer had turned into one gooey blob. Since he's said, he's scraped the residue away and it still doesn't work. I'm guessing the electronics in the head short circuited and melted the retainer. Or could possibly the battery become crushed so much that the positive nipple shorts to ground? What do you think? I only see him on holidays so I'm trying to get him to remember to bring it to me so I can send it in for repair.

BTW, I've owned several and gave away even several more Arc AAA's (maybe 20 or so now?) and that is the only one to die although I did send one back to Peter because it had a flickering problem.

could it have been caused by a battery leak?
