I'm seeing some 1x18650/2xCR123A lights out there that are claimed to be about 1,000 lumens OTF. EagleTac has a few. I'm wondering if there are any P60-style dropins that meet these specs?
I'm sure one of Vinh's overdriven XM-L2 drop ins makes 1000. Otherwise, a triple or quad a-la Kenji, Kerberos, Oveready, etc is probably your best bet.

As far as single emitters are concerned, using Cree's calculator (http://pct.cree.com/dt/index.html) you can see the current needed for ~1000 *LED* lumens (choose Model XM-L or XM-L2 and U or T Flux bin and select "V. Coarse 0.35A - 4.0A" Current Range in the top right). If you bumped current and had good heatsinking might be possible.
