Hi cpfers,

I'm back!.. Saw an Surefire E1 today at a local camping store. It is way cute. It's much smaller than I thought and the bezel is much smaller than my E2e. Looks like a very portable light.. nowonder TW4 is so good. Oh I didn't buy it, it was AU$229. Go convert.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

E1 for AU$229 !

My god, I looked up the exchange rate that is nearly $170 US dollars, for an E1.

Could somebody explain why the price difference? Certainly this can't be explained by VATs and customes duties?

I can get an E1 in black Type II for $50 or the E2 for $60. Then shipping it over to Australia. $9-$15 for USPS Global Priority (depending on weight.)

Still doesn't add up to $170....$65-$70 at most....

Mitchells Disposals? Man, that's a name I haven't heard for a long time... Is Mitchells' the one along Russell St, corner of Burke? Or the one further down Russell towards Chinatown? Geez... good ol' Melb...

Back on track, well, we'll be lucky if ANY of the dealers here carry SF... Closest to me would be S'pore, but currency conversion would definitely make it more expensive for me, but not as expensive as $170...

That is crazy. I have been shipping almost an order a day to Australia. Now I see why. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I heard that CR123 batteries were like $10 each! Heck I even had a chat with someone about eggs being $6 a dozen. I sell our extra fresh brown eggs (ok so I have 20 hens) for $1 a dozen locally. Wow.

Don't count too much on the prices here. Last time I checked, the L1 cost about SG$240.....!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif

I believe that the prices in Oz are a combination of hedging against the exchange rate (eg calculating everything at approx 50c US to $1 AUS), and the importers putting their markup on the products.

Having said that I also think that some retailers put ludicrous mark up's on anything specialty from the states because there are very few shops who will carry it. I only know of about 3 or 4 places in sydney that know what a surefire is!

Some pricing examples: 6P $197, KL3: $217, 9AN.... wait for it.... $600.00 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

and when you start talking about CR123's the cheapest i've seen them is about $6 AUS each.

And my friends wonder why I order torches & batteries by the box from the US!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

ferreter, match you those prices and raise you an SFM6 for $1260AU, I've seen an SF M900 weaponlight advertised for over $3000au /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

By the prices that we have to pay, i think i've paid for the postage component for a third time.

This thread has really made me feel better about the L4 i've ordered from the US for $120 US. It seemed like a lot of money at the time but now it's so cheap it's /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

BTW, SF G2 cost AU$150 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif in one knife shop, I think King's Chef. Dremel also cost too much here, 1 tungsten carbide cutter bit cost AU$35, while you can get the same in US for US$9. Go figure... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Geez, I guess the only thing that's cheap in good ol' Ozzieland is the beer... *sigh* /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif Boy do I miss those days...

~$110 for a G2?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif Well, at least you guys get to see it before you buy it. We only have 'word of mouth' and tantalising pictures to base our decision making on when it comes to buying lights!!

Hi Koala

I'd sell you my 2 week old TW4 for $130 US + shipping if you like. I need to put the cash towards modding an old grey kit to run a V3U 5W on a silver heat sink with gobbs of current flowing through it. I love the TW4's but have a bit too much $$$ tied up in flashlights to justify spending more. Let me know if you're interested.

:)

hey hey I didn't intend to post for price war /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif but anyways yes it is outrageous pricing indeed. I'll never support local flashlight dealers with this kind of prices.

Geoff, yes it was Mitchell's Disposals at Eliz St. in the city.

Thanks for reading.

Melbourne is mad for high-tech stuff. Good thing I'm in Hong Kong now, where everything is cheap! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
