Ok I am new to the board and feeling much better about myself now that I know that there are other, people in the world who like flashlights the same way I do.

I have really just started to look into the higher end flashlights, and am wondering about the difference between SureFire and Streamlight. I have noticed most of the people who post here are pro-SureFire and I am just curious as to why, what makes it the better brand?

Narski18,
Welcome to the board. I can gaurantee you that you could not have found a better place to hang out with people sharing the same interests as you from around the globe. The members here are terrific, not to mention helpful when you require that all-valuable flashlight advise.

As far as your question, I would credit SureFire with manufacturing some of the smallest, brightest, most powerful, not to mention aesthetically pleasing lights on the market, aimed largely towards millitary and law enforcement and their needs. The fit and finish of these flashlights is generally astonishing, especially on their HAIII anodized aluminum models. Streamlight, seemingly shares the same goal, but focuses largely toward rechargeable units--which are generally much larger than thier lithium powered counterparts. Since they have been making these lights for years, if you desire rechargeable, Streamlight may be the way to go. SureFire, on the other hand, has been making lithium powered lights for years, so if it is a lithium light you want, I'd stick with them. Especially now that their G2 is down to 25-30 dollars at some very respected dealers.

Brace yourself, if your wallet has not allready suffered greatly from your hobby (read: addiction), it will start to very soon.

Respectfully,
Dale

I agree with gstplanestoopid...If I wanted the smallest, most powerful light I could get I would go Surefire. Not to mention the perfect beam and solid construction.

However, Lithium batteries cost and the one hour run time isn't great.

SureFire rechageables have had a few issues with the batteries. Although, I believe the 10X is popular..though expensive!

I would go streamlight myself for rechargeable...maybe Tigerlight?

SureFire's are great!

The other way to think of it is:

Non-rechargeable: Surefire
Rechargeable: Streamlight

At least, that seems to be the consensus at this time.

I would like to thank everyone for the information, this BB is great, I whished that I would have found it a long time ago! I believe that for my purposes that SureFire is probably, what I am looking for, small and bright. Now is the hard part, having to pick from all the different models, with cost in mind so I don't end up putting myself in divorce court!!

Lets stick to the facts.

Surefire Dominator 10X rechargeable does not suck. It blows...away all of the competition.

Welcome to CPF!

If you download SureFire's 2003 Catalogue
http://www.san.surefire.com/misc/2003Catalog.pdf
It tells you the story of why SureFires are what they are.

In general, SureFire's aims differ from Streamlights.

I'm a SureFire fan. In my view Streamlight rechargeables are cheap "duty" lights for general LEO and Security etc. Products like the PolyStinger and UltraStinger are reliable workhorses as the SL20X was before. I respect that Streamlight have found a large market for such flashlights.

SureFires are different. SureFire's aim is to build the best. In the case of WeaponLights, cost is not always a factor. SureFire continually develops new technologies and new products. They invest in the future of illumination and are the leaders. They make illumination tools for more specialised applications. Dedicated WeaponLights and "Tactical" handheld "CombatLights" for those who need to be able to use light as a weapon rather than a guide.

Every now and then SureFire and Streamlight seem to cross into each other's markets. 6P/Scorpion, 8X/Stinger. I personally would like to see Streamlight push technology forward in their own direction. It will be interesting to find out whether they have any ideas on display at SS2003 next week.

i have models from both, and i tend to use my surefire e2e the most because it is always with me. it has harder anodyzing and a better beam pattern. if you're looking for a rechargable light, then streamlight is your best bet. if you want a non-rechargable, then i would recommend surefire.

small=surefire
larger=streamlight

they are both excellent companies offering excellent lights.

tombeis: the surefire 10x might me much better than any other rechargeable, but cost is a factor, and most people will not be able to justify the extra cost over a generic streamlight, even though the 10x might be better. if i wanted a rechargeable i'd probably go with a streamlight US or magcharger though.

jtivat: the surefire rechargeables don't suck...they're quite good in fact, just that they're expensive, and a while ago they were having some major problems with their battery sticks. i'm not sure if the problem has been fixed though.

Narski18: i'd recommend the C2, with the finish of your choice. if you want shock isolation and a high output lamp. go with the M2. if you want something smaller and more suited towards utility uses, then go with an E2o (i prefer the longer clip and low output lamp with longer runtime)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">There's the word cheap again... Why, in your point of view, is an SL-20X any cheaper
then, say, the SF 9AN? Or the Stinger compared to the 8AX?

I was slightly concerned about my use of "cheap" too.
I do not mean it in a bad sense. I was tempted to use "affordable" but then again, I expect SureFires are affordable by the teams who need them.

From what I've been told, and what I've read, SureFire uses more expensive components, and SureFires are generally more expensive, so Streamlights are cheap compared to SureFire.

That does not make Streamlights bad products. Cheap isn't always bad.

Streamlight appear to be providing duty lights to the many where as SureFire appear to be providing tactical lights to the few. I guess that's why Special Forces are special [because there aren't that many of them compared to other forces]

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">"Better" is a relative term. SureFire has placed itself in a premium niche in the market. It has publicly stated it is more of an engineering company that makes whiz-bang, leading-edge products than one which is concerned about price points.

"Better" to me means that for whatever product I see a need or want for that it meets a certain price/performance ratio. For a lot of things, you just can't even get what SureFire makes in another brand. So, that means SureFire has some relatively high prices because of lack of competition.

Are they worth it? If they've got what you need or want and no one else does, then I'd say yes. The quality of their product and the support after the fact is extremely high. I think that is part of the price point. You are paying for a lifetime warranty and the engineering of future products.

Are they worth it in areas where they have products with competition? That's where I start to change my tune. SureFire is usually the smallest and brightest light for a given product. But do you really need that, or is that a want? So that is where I'd ask what are you planning on doing with the light?

Could you make do with something a little larger or maybe a little heavier at half the price and 95% the quality? I think that is where StreamLight falls in sometimes. What about twice as bulky / heavy or 80% of the quality for 25% of the cost? I think Princeton Tec lights fall into that category sometimes.

For the person who wants a semi-specialized use light, I think StreamLight and Princeton Tec are excellent and lower cost alternatives sometimes.

But for bleeding edge technology or specialized lighting tasks, SureFire is damn hard to beat.

I have at least one of each above mentioned brands (and then some due to flash-a-holics disease!), and they all are worth the costs that I paid for them given they each fill a different role.

Probably my favorite light for the money is a Princeton Tec Surge. Its more an extremely bright general use and dive light than an everyday carry (EDC), but for $25, its a damn fine purchase! Given my needs for EDC lighting, you'll see me with a Photon II because I am a carpet dweller and something the size of a quarter can go with me anywhere. But if I know I might actually need to use a reasonable amount light for any given amount of time, my EDC will be an ARC LS. Given my relatively limited needs, I find that Nichia or Luxeon Star LEDs can fulfill 99% of them and I am huge on small size and light weight. YMMV!
