I just got a TL-3 Xenon, bright light. The bulb holder is mounted in a nice heavy aluminum slug. Any idea how it would hold the heat from a 5W LED running direct drive? I don't know if the TL3 uses the same slug, but I presume it's resistor limited. Direct drive, total output should be about the same as the Space Needle, though throw would be less because of the reflector geometry. The Space Needle has a big heat sink that lets you use the light til the batteries run down (20-30 minutes). The TL-3 probably hasn't enough mass for that, but I'm wondering if it could stand running for, say, 1-2 minutes before having to cool down. Also, if you've actually examined a TL-3 LED, would it be possible to simply remove a resistor, or would it be a more complex mod?
