Why did my LED upgrade catch on fire?

I upgraded my AA Mini mag with a Nite-Ize LED from Lowes. I have been using two Eneloops in the light without incident, and today the thing caught on fire. Seriously - on fire! I yanked the batteries out fast and disassembled the light outdoors while the smoke was still coming out of it. Anyone have any ideas what went wrong? I'm assuming that there was an issue with heat build-up, or the NiHms were driving the emitter to hard?

I somehow installed a Nite-Ize LED module backwards (reverse polarity) in a 2AA incan Mini Maglite once and recall that it became very hot before I removed it.
