His idea changed sports coverage forever. The real genius of his idea wasn't just dedicating a separate videotape machine for instant replays, but to select a different camera from the one that was on the air to go to the VTR, so the viewer could see a playback from a different "iso" camera angle.

Well, not quite. Hockey Night in Canada on CBC had it first (sorta) in 1955.

"Toronto's (George) Retzlaff ...experimentally used a new "hot processor" in 1955-56 to develop a kinescope (film) recording of a goal within thirty seconds for "almost instant" replay."
