I know that they are made for different size lights.
But what else is different about them?

Does the KL3 have a tighter beam?

What optics do each use?

Is the KL3 brighter than the KL1 when both are ran off 2x123?

Same optics (NX-05) in both. The only real functional difference is the driver circuit. The KL1 uses a boost/buck circuit so it can run on 1, 2, or 3 123's, while the KL3 only has a buck circuit, so it needs 2 or 3 123's. The buck-only circuit is probably a little more efficient. Supposedly the KL3 is a little bit brighter as well.

The brightness difference is still subject to the Luxeon lottery. All I can say is KL3 has a bigger head and sharper fins.

Question-
Please excuse my ignorance, I'm new, tried to search but couldn't find it covered.
Will the KL1 work on the L1 Lumamax body?
Have one w/a colored LED, wanting to be able to use a white LED head.
Thanks,
KMF

No. The KL1 does not work on the L1. The KL1 will screw on but it will not light up.
The KL1 will work on Surefire E series,E1/E1E, E2/E2E. It will also work on McLux 1x123/2x123/3x123 & the UBH (Universal Battery Holder).

Thanks for the quick reply-sure don't want to have to buy the whole light just to change LED colors...

I just tried it myself as it is a combination I've not tried before...the KL1 head screws onto the L1's body, but does not light up. So Hoghead is correct: the KL1 does not work on the L1 body.

How about changing the 2 stage tail cap of the L1 to that of the E2e or L4's clickie after replacing with a KL1 head? Anyone can try?

The tailcaps are not interchangeable.
E2e/L4 loads from the front.
L1 loads from the rear.
