mini maglite 2x AA upgrade

I have old mini maglite(non led, with short reflector)
Want to upgrade it with super bright led lamp.
I am going to change AA batteries and put 2x 14500 battery. and i will have more
Than 7 volt. But i dont know what current would be :/

First problem is that there are very little space inside of flashlight and i cann't put any driver.

Therefore i decide to built direct drive combination.

Can you recommended me wich led i can buy?
I want more than 1000 lumens! Is it possible without any deiver? Is direct drives current enough exemple for MT-G2 or for xml?

1000 lumens is very ambitious, and with a 700mAh 14500, runtime would be tiny.

The MT-G2 would certainly fit, but would leave almost no reflector, so I'm not sure what kind of beam you'd get.


I think the best mod for these is to convert them to take a p60 module. You can then get modest output on AA's or indeed use 14500's for higher output.

I have an XM-L U2 Mini Mag using a Solarforce p60. Makes for a nice pocket EDC that's a little bit different.

You can only Direct Drive those 6V jumbo LED's.


The MTG2 is the only option I think you have for the 8.4V input in Direct Drive.

Vinh has a 1xAAA (10440) sized light that can do over 1000 lumens, so it is definitely achievable. But you do have to be realistic...runtime is going to be short, and heat is going to be a major issue if you use it for more than a few seconds at a time. MK-R and XHP-70 LEDs might also be possible, in addition to MT-G2, but all of them will have those issues in common.
