There is a new beast out there. A new LED class! Polymer LEDs are being developed by several companies for flat screen video displays. No white light ones as yet, but the green ones are reaching 23 lm/W and yellow ones about 20 lm/W. Nowhere near the 100+ lm/W of fluorescent lamps, but very good for LEDs!
These LEds are made by using a sort of inkjet printing process similar to that used in printers for computers, so they can potentially be very cheap to manufacture. That is what makes it so interesting.
