Any defense against @#%$!! \"POPNAV\" ?

I'm cyber-illiterate but I think this is referred to as something that "hijacks" your computer. I'm on Earthlink cable with excellent router/firewall & Mcafee virus scan. If you have any ideas of what to do PLEASE put it in very simple layman's terms!

Thanks,
Brightnorm

I didn't think Spybot S&D handled PopNav, but I may be wrong.

I don't specifically recall if it handles Popnav; I just think it's a good tool for general spyware/scumware protection.

Thanks guys. I'd like to hunt down the perpetrators of spyware, viruses and other malevolences and shove 10,000 lumens where the sun don't shine! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif

The spyware is coming from the "respectable" commercial community that feels the internet is theirs, and your computer is one of their tools that they permit you to use to access their internet. While such may sound outlandish, believe me it isn't. Already they are working the courts to legitimize their actions, and they'll appeal to the legislature to enact laws protecting their actions as rights. Their success with the recent spam law is helping to insure that the competing "non-respectables" will lose their accounts. In turn, they will gain those accounts under their legally protected umbrella. After all, since they'll know your every action and interest, they can better target you with relevant offers. The wheels of commerce must turn freely and the concept of privacy and sponsor-free use of the net and your computer is counter-productive................ (enough of my rant) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif

I found a combination of "Spybot Search and Destroy" and Lavasoft Adaware gets rid of just about every piece of turdware around, and anything that they both miss will most likely be included in the next update.

Agreed Empath, but how much do you want to bet that that ******* testament to everything that is wrong with rampant legislation, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, will be used to cut off attempts to counter this trash by saying that programmers like those for AdAware and Spybot cannot reverse engineer their products or take steps to overcome their protections.

I swear, every Rep and Senator that voted for that thing should be voted out of office, Republican or Democrat.

Adaware Pro strips all Web Bugs and Data Miners. $19.95 and worth it.

CookieWall manages cookies (Free from Analog-X).

ZoneAlarm Pro blocks probes, hackers, pop-up ads and skyscrapers $39.95 and worth it.

Run all of them and spend some time learning how to use them properly and the commercial world is left with little or nothing. All of the above programs cost less than $60.00 together and are a formidable defense.

If you're really computer illiterate, then your in danger!. You need to spend some time learning how to protect yourself. My wife just uses e-mail and belongs to a forum or two and refuses to learn anything more than she needs to get by. Basically, she's mentally lazy and hates to learn anything new. She's lucky she has a SysAdmin for a husband or her 'puter would down for the count in a few weeks. Computer house keeping is a fact of life, learn how to do it or pay the price.

If you went into a store and just gave all your money to a clerk expecting them to take just the right amount for your purchase, it wouldn't be long before someone took advantage of your ignorance. You learn to handle money out of self defense, the computer world is no exception and requires them same posture.

If you have kids in the house that use the computer then you really need to use ZoneAlarm. Set it up to allow just what's needed to access the Internet and password protect it, that way, if something gets into your computer and tries to call home (data miners, Trojans, clandestine servers, etc.), ZoneAlarm will ask for permission before allowing the contact. If whoever is using the computer doesn't have the password for ZoneAlarm, then they can't say "Yes" to allow the connection. A powerful protection against information being released without your knowledge.

We use all of the above in our business computers as well and have never been penetrated. We preset all of the permissions and lock down the systems. If someone loads a program without permission that wants to access the Internet, it can't, ZoneAlarm blocks it and they don't have the password to permit access, they have to call me for that. I liked ZoneAlarm enough that I bought a site license for the company and installed it on every machine. This is in addition to our network firewalls, filters, proxy inspectors and other control points.

This is particularly effective for home users where a minor child may try to install Kaza or another music downloading program. Music downloading these days is a dangerous practice, one that can cost you thousands of dollars in fines, and you may not even know it's happening.

If you run a small business, a hacker could easily use your computer(s) to store child pornography or other contraband . This really happens, and very often. Porno pushers will use any unprotected system they can find to store contraband, then push it through chat rooms and news groups. I work for the Federal Public Defenders office and I've seen it in many cases. If the FBI happens to notice (and they almost certainly will), then they can come into your home or business, seize every computer and charge you with possession, a mandatory 5-10 years if convicted .

This is not fun. It has happened before (often), and it can happen to you. You could be put in jail, your business lost, your family and life destroyed.

Ignorance is dangerous and foolish. Get the assistance of a knowledgeable computer pro at least once and have them go through your computer(s) while you watch and learn. Have them disable all unnecessary services and programs, set up a firewall and data managers and instruct you on how to manage them effectively. If you don't know anyone, there are plenty of savvy people right here on the forum that can help out.

Believe me, saying you're a computer illiterate in court doesn't impress the judge or jury at all, everyone uses that defense, it doesn't work.

I use the same combination along with ZA-Pro, a defensive TriFecta.

Re: Any defense against @#%$!!

Brightnorm;

I don't mean to be harsh but it really can be as bad as I've said. We recently had a 44 year old man charged with posession of child porn on his computer. Without going into the details of the case, if I hadn't spent 2 weeks reviewing the complaint and peeling his computer like an onion (computer forensics), he would have gone to jail. He and his family would have lost everything. It's almost impossible to recover from a conviction like that.

Because we peeled the computer bit by bit we were able to prove he never had posession at all. The case was dismissed before trial for lack of merit. That wouldn't have happened if we hadn't checked everything and never would have happened at all if he had taken just a few reasonable precautions.

I'm not bragging here, that's not the issue. The issue is that there are (?)people(?) out there who just don't care what happens to you, and I don't necessaraly mean just the bad guys either!.

All this just doesn't seem important to most people, and most will get away with it for a long time, but like an accident, it can happen to anyone.

A lot of these hijack programs etc. exploit some of the many security holes in Windows, IE, etc. Periodically visit Windows Update and pick up the security patch of the day. It does help.

This morning I cleaned up a friend's computer. AdAware got rid of most of it, but his browser was still hijacked by find4u. I hunted around Google and found
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/junk/CWShredder.exe and it got rid of the last annoyance.

Give PestPatrol a try! I have found that it finds more stuff than Adaware. The first time I ran PestPatrol it found 118 files that needed deleting. The PestPatrol files are updated almost weekly.
