How do you know when you've achieved proper lockout?

So I read that you can unscrew the back of a light with a electrical switch enough to break the electrical connection thus stopping the light from draining the battery when not in use (if I'm correct). I was wondering how you go about this.

Do you just turn the light on and then unscrew the tailcap until the light turns off?

I know this sounds like a stupid question but I wanted to make sure I was doing it right.

Sure, that could work. Or just try turning on the light after you've loosened the tailcap. You'll get a feel for how much you have to twist to lock out your light. Usually, it's not much.
