I've bought a number of different 2D lights at 99 Cent stores. They are incredibly poor; no surprise about that. I have found one model however, that is easy to use as temporary test bed. It's a 2D cell that is even shorter than a 2C Maglite:
Just for fun, I fitted it with a LuxIII TV1K Star and a Li-Ion pack:
No way to get the heat out. Can't run it for more than two minutes without a cool down period. I've already melted through one reflector.
One good thing about this flashlight. It's long, weak battery spring allows for a variety of battery packs:
