Thread: MBI #7 - The MBI MatchBook, Got A Light anyone?

Default MBI #7 - The MBI MatchBook, Got A Light anyone?

Yet another discussion that got out of hand quickly.... LOL.

The MBI MatchBook, is a weekend project I posted on my website (click on the link to read that post).

I'll add some photos if/when I have a moment here directly but as this is gaining some fast traction, I thought it best to dedicate a thread to it, so we can all best keep track of progress.

I moved some relevant posts (especially the I want one posts) from the "Thing" thread to this thread.

Here's my original post from the "Thing" thread.
Will add some photos but you can see some if you click the link below.

Whilst on the subject of "things".....

In my spare time (a few seconds every other day ) I have been working on as much as I can, at least things within my direct control.
One of those, was eventually bringing the MBI MatchBook to life.

There were some slight details that needed research to solve (My proto's used black markers for coloring which is not ultra-durable, magnets at the base needed securing, the matches cost ~$4each) and like most things, a spontaneous thought in the middle of the night (partly triggered by my working on "things") and I saw the light. I went ahead and ordered all the ingredients and found a way to make it all work (and look just the way I want) even without having to commit to a massive quantity.

I have enough inbound to make a handfull (or two) of sets (based on 8 matches a book).
That's all due in the next 7 days and I'll be very happy to post photos as soon as they are ready.

For now, just posting "I'm in" in this thread is enough.

I'll likely have to limit the number on offer... unless I'm just so excited and impatient, that I decide to launch Thing-O (and maybe Thing-E) on IndieGogo directly, even before Thing-Ultimate is finished. (If I do so, the shipping time will be much faster than a typical campaign). A lot going on right now, in addition to my usual busy schedule.
Thinking out loud (as I type) somewhat...
The sensible thing to do might be to wait until I have Thing-Ultimate machined samples in hand and launch them all in one shot (if it were a CF / IndieGogo campaign that is).
Launching even the most modest of CF campaigns requires a fair amount of preparation if it's to be done well and I prefer to do things well.

I do also want to share Things with everyone sooner rather than later....
The main difference is a beta-thing run, will be a total lucky dip kind of scenario, as I won't announce what a thing is, you'll just have to wait and see what's in the post, but I can guarantee everyone will find use for their things.

    Thanks NowIC,
Gotta say I just stuck these in my wallet way back when. Sometimes, usually I forget I even have them, but I've used them in non-critical emergencies... like when my HF-R found it's way off of my keychain, and I was in the car, these did the trick.
Not massively bright, but easily enough to see with (or be seen). If only Hansel and Gretel had a few of these!!

    Welcome of course
I'm losing count now... Will get the first batch made up when everything is here and go from there.

I should mention that the plan is 7 Redheads, and 1 White. (for now only those two colors) in this first very very li'l test run.
After that, I can definitely offer more colors.

You know its tiny when he states, "tweak a couple of dimensions by about a hairs width". Lovely lovely!

Tgwnn, I don't want to derail anything on Things thread, but is there seriously a chance you will make enough Matchbooks that we could have a actually change getting one? It seems there is some serious interest. Of course, don't stop working on a Thing to jump on them.

    Hi Str8stroke,

Thanks for the post and question.
Absolutely. I did some tests over the weekend and things worked out pretty great.
I've ordered a new material to test, it's due to land Thursday and in the worst case, it should be pretty darn good.
Once I confirm it, seeings there is more interest than I expected, I'll set up a new thread and order some more of everything

Kinda silly asking after the fact, but how much does a matchbook cost?

    Thanks ChazHam,
For a lone-wolf-mcquade kinda operation guy, I do love the details but these days I'm aiming to try and find a balance between endless scope creep (striving for the impossible), being satisfied something is good enough and being able to share some new toys with you all, sooner rather than later.

    Hi Zandar,

It might be a small big box (lol) with tiny things but a few MatchBooks are doable too

    Hi SA Condor,
    lol, with pleasure.

Price for the MBI MatchBook, most likely $38~$40, the 8 matches being the most expensive part of course, magnets for each match, cover, book, bar magnets inside the book, as long as the printing is not too crazy, it ends up being about somewhere between $4~$5 per match.

If things go bananas and I end up making hundreds of them, I might be able to reduce the price a little but for now, other than getting the matchbooks printed, I'll be doing all the loving assembly and finicky work here

My proto matches were all hand painted and using thick card to make the box but I'm planning to make the matchbooks from some PET/PVC which is far more durable (somewhat similar to the plastic material used for folders with clear plastic sleeves inside them, perhaps just a little thinner), and I've found a very slick solution to replace the paint.

Sounds great, can I go on the list for one when there's more colour choices?

Oh, and what are the dimensions of a MatchBook?

    Thanks.

PS - are you planning any larger lights, say 2x CR123A or 18650?
I'd love to see what you'd spec and design.

    Hi lightlover,

    Of course, with pleasure.

Dimensions are 3.75cm wide x 3.5cm tall x 0.4mm thick (+- 0.1mm depending on thickness of the MatchBook material).
Subject to slight change but not much. The matches are about 3cm long and 3.3mm~3.5mm diameter pending final tests.
