It's to aid threading the lanyard through , due to the lanyard being thick .

Hats to explain , thread both ends of the string though leaving a loop, put the thicker lanyard though loop, pull both ends of string to pull lanyard through.

Most Ultrafires are very mod-friendly too. If you've never tried your hand at building a light, thus could be a good opportunity.
