I have a really nasty, dim, blue tinted basic torch here - but it does have a decent reflector. I was wanting to do a quick and dirty mod - putting the brightest LED possible in there that can just go across 2 alkaline AAA batteries with no circuitry. I am not expecting miracles, but at least I may use the thing more if some decent light comes out. Any suggestions welcome. Runtime is nor really a priority.

I would use a red / orange LED, approximately 617 nm, as it will put out a lot of light for the current, and have a low Vf.

If you get something that can handle up to 500 ma, then it will be very unlikely to ever burn out. I am partial to Lumileds LEDs, but it might be that a 5mm size that can run on perhaps 50ma is what will fit.
