How do 0.8v-4.2v bulbs work with diodes that require 2.85v?

Trying to get low voltage performance out of some LED mods I am doing to Vintage MX991/UV flashlights. I'm wondering how the solarforce and other 0.8v-4.2v drivers manage to get performance below 3v.

Anyone know a simple circuit that would achieve this?
