I'm looking for rechargeable options to run on a Surefire E2D Ultra (500lmn)... the 16650 option seems not to be able to draw consistently at max. Any other options? I don't know where to start. TIA.

You could try with a custom 18650 tube. E head and C tailcap. A single Eagletac 18650 3500mAh 10A cell should be fine.

In addition to FiveMega and other good ideas,
Have you considered having the body or a body bored out to fit a 18650? Precision Works can help you there. Also, Overready does some bored E series.

Not sure what your budget is; http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb...8350-18500-and-18650-Also-Ti-bezels-and-rings

Just keep in mind, the body will be much more thin, if you are doing heavy duty use. I have 2 bored E series bodies and have never had a issue.

Also search "E series 18650 body" here.

Good luck.

Thanks guys! will the 18650 be able draw at max (500)? Or should I be looking at a specific 18650? Currently using Keeppower protected 18650 / 16650. My 16650 fails to run at max consistently.

Stop the Press!!!!!
Ok, So I just tried a Efest 17670 in my Ultra, to my surprise NO HIGH!!!!!! Dang, it just blinks on for half a second, that is not what I expected. I bet a Single 18650 won't work either. Let me go charge the cell all the way and report back this evening. Still, I think the voltage cut off for surefire is issue. You may have to go with to 3.0 volt RCR123s. But you won't have much of a run time.

Edit again! Ok, I found a recently charged 16650 and a 17670, I didn't check the voltages, but neither would make high work. So, you need to probably scrap the 18650/Ultra idea. Unless anyone else has a Ultra they can test this out on? But, I bet they are all gonna have the same results. Sorry my man. I learned something today.

Yea I'm pretty sure no 3.7v battery is going to work. I can say that you can use 2 LifePo4 cells.

I was I the same situation. What I did was buy a Surefire E1D and put the head on the E2D body. Then use a 16650 to power it. Is not 500 lumens but it's a great set up if your willing to settle for 300 lumens. Plenty of run time and the E1D has a great beam.

@Str8stroke -- same here with the 16650, it does not work well. Must be same situation if I use an 18650.

@Sean - Yes the E1D head will work, but I am using a 16340 for the E1D and works great too. So am now looking for options to run rechargeable batt on the E2D.

I can't test my Surefire E2D Ultra with my 18650 tube because i modded it to take a single 18650 (4.2v max). That way i can enjoy long runtimes with excellent regulation.

Mine also acted the same way, not generating anywhere near full brightness consistently from a 16650 or 17670. I don't recall if I tested it with an IMR 18650, but I would expect to get the same results.

Surefire two primary CR123 lights, including the E2D LED Ultra, are designed to be used exclusively with.......two primary CR123 cells, or two LiFeP04 (or whatever the alphabet soup name the 3 volt rechargeable cells use) cells. They "may" work with two RCR123s. They "may" work with one Li-Ion.

Surefire isn't going to suggest using either alternative, and they won't care if you're dissatisfied with the results of using anything but two primary CR123s.

xdayv,
I'm just going to put this out there, for what it's worth, but I am not necessarily recommending it. After I had read on CPF, several years ago, that someone was running an E2DL bezel on 2xLi-ion, I decided to try it myself. I currently have a 1st-generation E2DL bezel (80 lumens?) on a Fivemega E-series 2x18650 body. The 18650 cells are protected Panasonic NCR18650 (2900 mAh?). Again, I don't know how close this might be to being too much voltage, and I don't know in which ways the 80-lumen E2DL differs from your E2D Ultra bezel, but you may find this to be food for thought.

Guys, thanks! Hoping somebody can shed more light on this, a 2 x RCR123 (3.7v) option will be nice.

Thanks Grizzman, I read it backwards starting from the last page. :candle:

I mght just try it one of these days.

Sidenote: I have an incoming VME supposedly to be used in lieu of the E2D Ultra head... If the RCR won't fry the E2D Ultra head, I guess I need a new MDC body for the VME?

MDC bodies are pretty sweet, around the same size as your E2D Ultra and fully compatible with your E-series heads. Unfortunately the E2D Ultra doesn't run on 16650s like the old 200 lumen one, and there isn't really a way to use lithium ion that makes any sense - even if you could use 2X 16340 why would you want to with only 700 mah capacity? Just get an MDC with whatever Malkoff head you want and call it a day. I run an MDC body with the E2 Scout head (300 lumens / 10,000 cd) and carry it every day with a 16650.

I don't own the Malkoff E2T head Hudson mentioned, but I've got the larger drop-in versions of it. It should delivers a beam profile very similar to the E2DL Ultra, if not quite at the same output level, (but without the green tint). It will generate full output from a single Li-Ion.

I agree that using two low capacity RCR123s isn't a good solution for the Ultra...and most of the reason I sold mine.

With the limited runtime of 2 x RCR123, I wonder if 2 x 18650 will be feasible, albeit a longer body and bored.
