easyest and safest way I have done is to un-solder the leads, put a tooth pic under the lead while heating, it helps to pop is off the solder mount. I ues an exacto mini saw blade to cut the underside of the star 'slug', cutting between the leads as opposed to across the leads.

cut about half way through then grab the ends and bent away fron the emiter. it should simply pop off. Might need a little help once one side comes free.
