I recently purchased a gently used Surefire 9P which has the black Type II anodizing. I thought this would be a great light to send back to Surefire and have them strip and reanodize it in the Black Type III. I sent an email to their customer service department and asked them a. could they do it, b. how much, and c. how long would it take. They responded in a matter of hours, with a short reply "That is not an option". Oh well....

Does anybody have any experience or history with Surefire lights that are banged up over the years, and then had the coating repaired by Surefire?

SF doesn't guarentee the finish on their lights. Once you've paid for it, taken it out of the box, and used it, the finish is your problem. If it doesn't light up, they're VERY good about fixing it, but finish isn't their business... Try a local anodizer, though...

Honestly, it would probably be cheaper for them to replace the light than to re-finish it...
