Anyone else interested in this lamp ?

This rechergeable version features a Cree XM-L2 U3 emitter. Not sure about the tint.

Its rotational mechanism has changed a bit and is less edgy than that of the TR15.

Its on/off button has also been improved, given it informs about the battery status upon each insertion instead of when the battery is nearly depleted.

It looks like the AA/14500 version of the R1, niceley reviewed here : http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?442203-Field-Use-Review-of-the-Rofis-R1

Sadly it seems to be missing a moonlight mode. It'd really be close to the perfect EDC light for me if it had a hidden moonlight mode (à la Olight) and a neutral white high CRI emitter.

The R2 looks to be the evolutionary replacement for the TR15 in the way that the R1 was for the TR10. I don't own a TR15, but I own a TR10 and an R1 (I'm the guy who wrote the review you linked). In essence, you can transfer the differences between the TR15 and TR10 to the R2 and R1. They have similar specs between the generations and between the battery types. What largely changed were the features and UI but in a way to make the R series feel different than the TR series. That being said, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Also, the R2 does in fact have a half-lumen moonlight mode. If the UI is anything like the R1, it will be hidden. The R1 simply has a L,M,H in the normal cycle with hidden access to Moon, Turbo, Strobe, and SOS. It's a good UI for those who don't like cycling through the modes they seldom use or don't even want.

For me, the R2 is basically the model to get if a AA battery source is strongly preferred. Otherwise, the R1 with the 16340 is the better model, IMO. It's lighter, shorter, has 200 more lumens on turbo, has a longer max runtime, and higher candela. On the other hand, the R2 has a longer run time on turbo before step-down, according to Rofis stats. However, the main pro is the ability to use the most ubiquitous battery in the world and it's also thinner in diameter for more comfortable pocket carry. Lastly, it seems to have the new MR70's button type rather than the R1's button.

All that being said, the R2 is likely to be very similar to the R1 and if that's the case, it will be a very good compact flashlight for versatility and functionality just like the R1 but simply running on a different battery type.

Thanks a lot for your input ! In fact, I looked up the R2 after reading your excellent review

If the R2 does come with the same moonlight mode as the R1 you've got, then that'll be fantastisch :p
I discovered this hidden placement (available only from off) on my Olight S1A. I find it works the best ; because although I value moonlight very much, there are times I want to start directly on low.

You make interesting points on the trade-offs between the R1 and the R2.
For me, battery availability is a must, so universal AA it is. Also I baraely ever use the High modes on my lamps, let alone the Turbo functions.
The R1's button looks better IMHO, but that's certainly not a deal breaker.

Given your points, I think the R2 will be a very good fit for you. Rofis' website shows the R2 to have a moonlight mode of 0.5 lumens. I'm certain the user interface will be the same as the R1 and similar to what you describe for your Olight; You press and hold from OFF to access moonlight directly.

I understand the desire for a AA flashlight for universality. In fact, my latest acquired flashlight was around that idea to serve as my "compact travel light". I got a Jetbeam E10R because it's a AA-sized flashlight with a built-in microUSB port in the threads. It's not the fanciest thing out there but it was rather cheap (got it under $20) and has the cooler tint I prefer. So far, I like it overall but an R2 would be a higher-end flashlight with more features and versatility.

Are you planning to get you hands on an R2 when it's finally out ? If you do, I'd love to read your review :D

I'd review it if it was given to me for review but I won't be purchasing it given I already own the R1 which I think is very similar. I also have enough AA-sized flashlights so I can't really justify purchasing the tempting R2 anytime soon. I'm planning to review some other flashlights I've recently purchased but it takes me a while given my field reviews are a culmination of multiple outings over the course of a few weeks. This way, I get to know the flashlight much better than an unboxing and impressions from initial use. That being said, most of my orders haven't even arrived yet.

Haha, thanks. While I'm not sure if the R2 is in production yet, I will say that I got another new product sent to me for review. I also plan to review other models I've recently purchased if I don't find many reviews for them here on this forum.

Nice ! Looking forward to seeing what you've been provided with :)
Since the R2's page has been brought online, the commercialisation of the lamp should be imminent.
