If 4 C batteries, that's approx. 6v. I'd stay in that area if you're swapping to something else. But I recommend staying with the C batteries. They average 3800mah each. Someone else may have more knowledge than me, but I think you're going to be hard pressed to have better runtimes with lithium ion cells without changing the LED driver.

You could always run AA Eneloops in C cell spacers. Or you could find some of those Tenergy Premium C cell (10200, IIRC) Nimh. No where near the runtime or capacity of course- but if you want rechargeable, the eneloops may be the cheapest. Or do what Greene said and keep C cells.

I would go with NiMh and/or spacers.
You can still find "C" sized NiMh.
I have used "AA"" NiMh's with a few "D" sized lights with success.
