Vape as smoking cessation

To start with, I like cigarettes. I like coffee, and I like chocolate. In moderation none of those is a big deal but....

Like anything too much of a good this is.... too much.

I used chocolate for years to offset cravings for the sugar in alcohol when it was time to stop binge drinking. It worked. Haven't used alcohol beyond a shot of nyquil for over a decade now. Trouble was, I ate too dam much chocolate for a few years. About $35-40 a week on candy or other snacks and it was taking a toll after a while so I stopped doing that.

I used coffee to stay alert out on the highway at 2am. When returning to day work coffee is still part of a routine. Now Mrs. Fixer makes coffee you can use as paint. It's yummy but causes diaretic issues so when working in heat that aint cool. So I switched to 50% decaf then decaf and get a morning boost with fruit juice.

I grew up in a family who should have been born with a chimney sticking out of their skull. And all who smoked (notice past tense) passed away from heart issues. By 12 I was trying cigarettes. I stopped by 13 but resumed at 15. I'm 54 now. And like drinking, I did not go the moderation route. But at 54 it's time to rethink that way of life. I have noticed (thankfully) that smokers are becoming fewer and fewer in my daily circles. Most I run with are younger and never understood the virtue of a cigarette. So they look at me as an oddball. Well not only because I smoke, but carrying at least 2 flashlights in the daytime also causing looks with a head tilt.

A recent visit to a heart doc caused the thoughts of smoking to become a habit that needs to stop. Plaque in these older arteries is quite likely an issue that will only get worse. I remember watching a video of blood flow in my dad's heart and asking his doctor "how is that blood getting from A to B" (as there was an obvious gap in an area) and doc says "that is one of those miracles I cannot explain". Now, I did not go see a heart doctor because it seemed like it was time. It's like going to a dentist after not going for 20 years.... because there's an issue that requires a specialist. Doc didn't say "quit or die". What he said was "I smoked from 17 to 45 and quitting was the hardest thing I ever did".

I told him I quit everyday..... for about an hour. He suggested a vaper. He said the jury is still out on the long term affects but by not ingesting tobacco smoke the plaque buildup will halt. Hey, count me in.

I have quit cold turkey several times. I learned each time what I was doing wrong after the fact. A few years back I tried cig-a-likes before that word was even used. They were called 'digital cigarettes' back then. Trouble was they were less than reliable and make from Lord knows what. Mrs. Fixer would get painful blisters on her lip from digital smoking and mine kept popping causing nicotine laiden juice to run down my face. A whole day supply of nicotine soaking into my skin was not my idea of a good time.

It's 2018 and vaping has come a long ways thank goodness. Sure those junky cig-a-likes put out by big tobacco still exist. But the fad of digital smoking is no longer a fad. It's an industry not unlike the flashlight industry. And I've met countless people who kicked the tobacco stick habit with a vape device. Not only that but proprietors are more than happy to help smokers stop. Afterall they make a living selling non tobacco products.

What my first thought was to return to the e-cig. But then I discovered these "pod" systems that take all the guesswork out of the process and replace the buldge in your pocket once taken by a pack of cigarettes and now replaced with something safer.

In my home state they banned smoking indoors a few years back. But vaping was still new so that wasn't banned. Mrs. Fixer and I to get our kicks would whip out our e-cig and puff away in a restaraunt to get reactions from others. Often the reaction was puzzlement as other patrons thought we were violating a law because the e-cig tip glowed like the real thing. Now vaping is banned too. I had begun to notice in traffic there were times a driver would bellow out enough (what I thought was) smoke to look like the inside of their car was on fire. It turns out that "big clouds" from a vape device is a big deal to some.

So when I rejoined the digital world that was not on my list. 40 year smoker lungs whince watching those folks. I set about learning about the vape while trying out a pod or two but.... none were satisfying that craving to ingest tobacco smoke. Fruity, snacky type flavors are yummy and satisfying to the taste buds for a bit. Yet my brain wasn't falling for it. Each puff of grape was creating a stronger urge. My brain was also saying "you need tobacco flavor dummy". Yet all of the juices out there were only attempts with a dab of vanilla or flavorings trying to mask the non real McCoy.

I stumbled across a brand called Black Note while learning the vape details and instructions at a stoners youtube channel. I did some research and found a flavor called Prelude (virginia tobacco).

Tah-Dah!! Those folks have found a way to gentley remove tobacco flavor from real tobacco without harsh chemicals. I ordered two bottles of this fairly pricey stuff and boy was I not disappointed. A tankful in my favorite mod was about to begin. First puff was a surprise. Wait a minute.... that wasn't vape, that was a cigarette.... so I lit a tobacco stick and did a puff by puff comparison with my pod that hits like a cigarette. I could not believe it.

That was yesterday at about 4pm. It's now 9am and I have not smoked anymore cigarettes since that last side by side test. Not even an after dinner smoke. So this is what I'll call day 1. And it is still early. And to add a bit of torture to the test I have a pack of smokes nearby. Ok, so last night I did try another cigarette, but put it out after a few drags because I liked the vape experience with Prelude better.

My choice of device at this time is a pod by JoyeTech called a Dolphin. An update to my backup, also by JoueTech called a Penguin. Both have a ceramic coil system with choice between 0.25, 0.6 and 1.2 ohms for a different experience with the same flaving. I like the 0.6 and bought a few replacements. It gives off a similar experience as those mods that use 0.5 ohms that provides a satisfying flavor and a good "drag" to mimic that all addictive tobacco stick. I put a tester tip on mine from trial batching at various vape stores and head shops. The soft silicone tip extension mimics a filter on a tobacco stick. I also added a few drops of butter/pecan/almond tobacco by Camelot to the Prelude juice for a pleasant after taste to aid the yuck mouth/want another cigarette urge. The Prelude is a 50/50 vg/pg mix that is smooth, smooth, smooth. Not the least bit harsh.

I'm not saying my way is 'the way' to halt smoking. I'm just throwing out a few tips that can hopefully help someone else who is stuck like I was trying to trick their brain into thinking the vape tool is the real thing. As a reward and way of helping with vape tongue I keep a backup device loaded with a flavor I found to be to my liking when trying to curb the tobacco stick urge. In my case it's an Avail mix called Pandoras Box, which is a nice blend of sour grape and sweet grape. The 0.6 also provides a combo of sweet/tart my brain likes. 0.25 was too tart. 1.2 was too sweet.

I started vaping about two weeks ago to reduce my smoking. No thoughts of quitting were on the radar. Afterall I like cigarettes. It was easy at first and after a few days my smoking was down 75%..... but little by little the tobacco stick was taking back lost ground like the enemy in a tough battle to the death. But why? I pondered.

It was beginning to look like no matter what flavor of candy, juice or food I vaped that urge for a nasty ole cigarette was not easing up, but getting worse. When I did those first few puffs of Prelude I though "nah, this aint gonna work either". After about 25 puffs I began to forget I wanted to smoke. It was the darndest thing. My brain over the last two weeks was craving the sweet stuff from the vape but the yuck from a cigarette too. Now my brain is being satisfied in both cases.

At $23 for 30 ml it aint cheap. And Black Note is not the only one using natural flavor extraction either. But the ones I had tried before "reds", "partriots" etc all tasted like tobacco smells. A smoker will tell you that it's the flavor of burning tobacco, nota flavor that tastes like unburnt smells that satisfies the urges. Otherwise we'd all be walking around with an unburned cigarette taped under our noses.

Hopefully others will share their tips on how they were able to finally say "I'm done with the cancer stick". Like building muscles, no pain no gain. So there is going to be a struggle. Yet like throwing darts at a bullseye, you likely won't hit the double bull dead center on the first throw. If you keep trying at some point (with or without a cessation aid) you will hit it.

For me triggers are caffienated coffee, the smell of a burning cigarette, urges after a meal and a stressful situation. I switched to decaf coffee (and a juice as a stimulant), puff on a nice desert flavor after meals and will have a tobacco flavor available for typical urges (plus one using a 0.25 ohm coil to get an even stronger vape for those stressful times). And I look forward to times when I can say "don't smoke" when someone asks for a light.... (instead of handing them a flashlight.)

Later today the Mrs. and I are planning to visit a highly reccomended local vape shop. Me, for a flavor of juice that mimics that candy whose motto is "taste the rainbow" and being a tinkerer will probably leave with a device that fits in my shirt pocket but allows the tinkerer in me the opportunity to try various wicks and coils.

Mrs. Fixer wants a pen. A refillable device that can be adjusted to enhance or reduce tastes of the multi flavored brews she has discovered. See, I showed her how a particular sauce she likes can change using different ohms from pre-made coils in her favorite pod system. We won't be looking for enough power to start the car in the event of a dead battery.

But we do want to be able to tweak the "drag" or flavoring at times. And I really doubt either of us will be putting out so much steam we cannot see each other setting across the table from one another.

What we also want is to puff away while the grandson is in the room without the notion he is breathing a batch of leftover tobacco smoke, without having to step outside in a thunderstorm to have a cigarette.

Awesome! There have been a lot of stories similar to yours. I've also heard of some people where it didn't work. I don't smoke or vape so feel free to correct me but the big factor is that cigarettes wreck your sense of smell/taste so you don't notice how disgusting they are. If you drop cigarettes entirely for vaping then your smell/taste starts to return. Once that happens it is really hard to go back. If you "cheat the diet" and even have just 1 cigarette a day in addition to vaping then your smell/taste won't return.

There is also another element. It helps to be aware of how much nicotine is in the juice you buy. A lot of people have had great success with tapering down the nicotine in the juice. It saves even more money and eventually the vape just becomes an adult pacifier. Usually the story ends with them misplacing their vape one day and never bothering to replace it :)

Thanks for the tips Para. Your site rules btw.

I'm attacking the habit from various directions such as recognizing the triggers, seeking out advice (and support), keeping a cup of yummy (non trigger inducing) liquids nearby and taking mental notes of the positive affects thus far. Lessons learned from previous attempts that hopefully won't be repeated. Yet the cigarette flavor was outflanking all those other stategies.

I did not set a target date, nor stress over the lost battles. Afterall, in total average of 2 weeks my smoking was down 50% .... at least. Some days the cigarette whipped me pretty good, but not a single day of 30+ happened. Nope, on the losing days it was like 20. Instead of 15-20 ultralights and 15-20 full flavor it was 20 ultralights. And that was the bad days. The good days were 10 ultralights. That's 10 without the urge for more than that. No toture, no pain, no mental anguish. But I also took note of the triggers and changed that. One trigger is to reach in my shirt pocket and whip out a smoke. A pod satisfied that muscle reflex. So a big ole box that requires a tote bag aint going to solve that issue.

The soft tip satisfies the unconscious sensation that hard plastic did not. Now it's only been 2 weeks. My goal was not to quit entirely two weeks ago. It was to reduce the number of cancer sticks per day and yet still enjoy a few.

To me it's like eating a elephant. Overwhelming at first, yet after a few bites and taking time to chew, relax and digest for a couple of weeks.... the goal that was at one point to smoke 5 or less per day has (subconsciously) changed to zero at some point. No pressure, no intension of zero by day X. Nope, it's a thing of puffing on a device a few times each time the brain says "oh just one won't hurt". (Like right now lol.)

A blog writer at Black Note told the story of how he "accidently" quit smoking by vaping. Apparently he tweaked a blend of tobacco flavors that his brain preferred over the real thing and one day realized he hadn't smoked in 3 days. Whoops.

My brother has stopped smoking. He vaped for years without stopping cigarettes. When I told him I was vaping his competitive urge took over. He pulled out some classic devices and resumed the vape. That was the last day he smoked. So I ask him a couple of times a week to describe what makes him want to smoke. Being my identical twin we share similar personalities so I have advance knowledge of triggers. Yet he has a competetive spirit about him. When we played baseball he liked the role of pitcher or short stop as being part of the action floats his boat.

I preferred right field. On guard if needed but largely un-noticed. He is also a type who likes to be out front with new gadgets where I prefer tried and true things. He had a blu-ray player before I replaced my hi-fi vhs machine. So he's up on all the latest vape gadgets and has told me he is bringing me his former favorite mod device later today. It seems he has acquired one that has a brain, yet is capable of being put through rigorous abuse and still work. Kind a cross between a David Chow and PK invention if they built vape boxes.
I just want simple.

He goes through more ml of juice in a day than I have in 2 weeks. He disappears behind a cloud of steam when exhaling from his device. I may exhale a whisp of stem. Sometimes enough to actually look like exhaling a cigarette drag. My point in saying all of that is to point out folks don't need to think another persons way has to be theirs.

Like flashlights there are lots to choose from. Styles and purposes abound. Just do some research, find a few folks to support you and enjoy the experience while you cut back until the day the vape becomes preferable over a cigarette.... then you can begin to reduce the nicotine and like Para said, have an adult pasifier some day.

Greatness.

We support you in this endeavor and applaud your level-headed strategies. My mother quit cigarettes in her 60's I believe. She lived to 84. No vape concoctions back then. She used toothpicks to have something in her hand and her mouth. Got some damaged teeth from that but let the toothpicks fall by the wayside after a few years. She was a smokestack from an early age.

Think of the money you could be saving in the future. I keep thinking of your grandchild and those growing-up years that you will be able to enjoy (or endure when teenagehood comes along)

Awesome read as always me fixer. As always you have it all in control, researched and stored in the memory bank. Your not a book, your a library!

Enjoy the ride, gadgets , building, tweaking , making, it's a mr fixer thing through and through. But and it's a big BUT, it's also another hobby/interest. As a chuffer(or puffer as the kids call it) is always with me, spending $50 or so on a mod is easy justified in my mind. Of course another $30 on a tank all adds, but they get used . Savings are considerable and health gains too. Having an annual health check through work, my lung capacity has increased significantly from when I used to smoke(15 lights a day).
Of course different , but Vape and flashlights have many similarities, both go hand in hand.;)

What I have noticed which is not so good, I Vape more than I would smoke. If you can get into the habit of Vape for a few mins and put down for a bit, excellent. I have not, so always there chuffing away! My nic level is very low to a point of .....well no point in having. But my mind for now knows it's in there, even though it works out around 1.5mg or less.

I might have mentioned it , but at one point I deliberately went without nicotine for 3 weeks and never could tell. Different for everyone, but started adding a little .......just because really. Hard to explain, might try without again, obv a mental thing rather than actual need.

With you all the way on this journey:cool:

A little test this morning:
Start out with tea instead of coffee. Sat alone in the den drinking bottled tea for the first hour today and no hint of an urge to smoke. None. Nada.

I made a batch of coffee for Mrs. Fixer. She arrives in the den with a cup for me and within minutes I was having that first cigarette.

Test fail? Well yes and no.
Lesson learned. The trick will be to avoid the taste of tea with a cigarette. So yeah, I'm going to enjoy a cup of java and a cancer stick this morning. But the day I put down the cigarette will be a day without morning coffee.

There is around 1/2 the caffeine in a cup of tea compared to coffee. Soooo 2 cups of tea is the answer ;)

Good point sir.
I may end up becoming a tea snob. Case in point:
One day at work I was in an Aztec Mexican restaraunt being served by Chinese people. Best glass of iced tea I'd ever had in my 54 years. It was like they'd just picked the leaves, toasted them and ground them while I read the menu. That tea had flavor like you Brits require. Not that store bought stuff that was bagged back in 19 something or other. Now as a lad I hated 'good' tea. Tastes like yard weeds.... (yes I had tasted grass playing sandlot style tackle football a few times.)

Mrs. Fixer likes a brand of store bought bottled stuff that mimics that stuff bagged in 19 something or other. Last week the store was out so we bought another brand. A brand that tastes like yard weeds to her but yummy to me.
Tah Dah!!

I have a new morning flavor to replace coffee. Hence the test this morning.

Yeah I let the tobacco stick win a couple of times today. But at 9am (8:20 now) I'm going to take on the urges and battle them like I'm trying to take "Flashlight Hill" from an entrenched enemy, popping off the enemy urges one at a time until 4pm. Armed with a couple of vapes and a glass of something tastey. I'm ready for this.

Another battle tactic is to not smoke indoors. Todays forecast is hot and muggy. I've already set the pack out on my deck where Mr. Sunshine will be in full broil mode until about 4.

What you have achieved so fast is fantastic , only smokers or ex smokers can relate to how difficult it is. Reducing from 40+ a day to single (or near)figures is amazing! Huge well done , hopefully it will get easier to a point where it's all in the past. Stay strong, carry on kicking the a55 out of it :twothumbs 2018 will be remembered for many things good and maybe not so, but it could well be one of the most important /significant of your life.

For me now, must be 7yrs I think(sure 2011 in the January ) I can smell a cig from miles litteraly(yep a big nose helps lol). But there are no urges or cravings at all, to a point if I stopped vaping,I would not start smoking. Thinking back(that's easier said than done also), the odd craving gets less and less . Then even 6m or a year on, the odd craving may occur. But you know you don't want to go through it all again . Rach is going through it again also, maybe like your brother. She is down to 2-4 a day , but it's still a big step in the right direction. Key is in the early days, just have that Vape in hand, get a craving, Vape like mad, it passes . No Vape at hand, then a possibility a cig will end up smoked.

Trouble is......I enjoy vaping . Oh well, I could be enjoying worse things in life ,for me, after all, being perfect is boring.

Reminds me of that joke, "Will it add ten years to your lfe of just make it feel ten years longer?"

The only way I can relate to this is my addiction to Esopresso.
When we had the reataurant I had a lovely ancient espresso machine. The first thing I did in the morning was turn the machine on, the second thing I did was make a double strength double sized cup of espresso.
A routine Blood Pressure Check showed mine was too high and they sent me home with a portable monitor.
Next morning I took my BP then had my coffee and took it again. It was something like 210 over 150 - whoops.
I stopped the coffee that moment and had the biggest migraine I've ever had.
20 years on I still get a feeling everytime I smell fresh ground beans. Trouble is I don't feel any better for it, hey ho.
Good luck with the quest Mike, we're rooting for you.

I remember about 10yrs back to a friend in work, could not understand smoking and why not just give up. Something that can not be explained easy! So i said, what is your thing, what do you need to drink or eat. The answer was cups of tea and a few biscuits. My reply is, well they are not actually addictive or anything like cigarettes. Could you give up cups of tea and biscuits today for the rest of your life.....................the answer was no chance.

Coffee has a hold on many of us P, i think a lot is down to routine as well. Morning up, coffee, work................part of the day. I dont drink much coffee, maybe 1 a day max, usually a brew for me.

Welcome to the world of vaping, my you find lots of goodness, and never go back!

I switched 913 days ago, and not had a single sticky since. For a lot of people (myself included), vaping really is a permanent way out. I might quit vaping at some point, but if I ever relapse, it'll be back to vaping, never stinkies.

I've tried to keep up with the science of things, and figure I should mention a few of the things I've come across.

For a lot of people, the hardest part seems to be the morning smoke. That's a tough one to kick. Stinkies "hit faster", while with vaping, it can take a little bit more time before it satisfies. For me, understanding the that was the key to make it work. It wasn't that the vaping was any less satisfying, it just took a bit more patience in the morning.

While it's almost generally accepted now that vaping almost certainly is significantly less harmful than stinkies, it's less certain that dual use (both smoking and vaping) carries the same benefits. There's actually some indications that it could be worse than smoking along. Not sure why, maybe the vaping aids the lungs in trapping bad things from smoking. The takeaway should perhaps be that if you need to dual use while getting into vaping and getting things right for you, then by all means do so. Try to get fully off of the stinkies though, if you're in it for the health. A higher nicotine dosage with vaping, is almost certainly better than dual use.

There has been some talk that natural extracts might not be ideal health wise, arguments vary from oil content to particle sizes. Still, I haven't heard of any harmful side effects, so the balance I'd choose from myself is to go with whatever works for you in the beginning, and then - once satisfied and used to it - maybe explore other flavor options.

For a lot of people on this forum, I'm thinking rebuildable tanks can be cool to know about. You get to tinker and cut costs at the same time.

Be careful though, exploring equipment and testing new stuff can easily turn into a flashaholic-like experience. ;-)

I finally landed on dicodes dani mods, with squape rebuildable MTL tanks, which has kept me off of equipment hunting for well over a year now.

Look super nice terjee, no wonder you have been content for 12 months..................OUCH on the price. But then again, that would be a typical month spend on cigs.

My little set up i cant put down...........literally

Being in Norway, more like 14 days cig spending. ;-) Anyway, yeah, it costs a bit, but virtually zero cost for coils etc, so even compared to "normal" tanks I've probably saved back what I spent. To anyone enjoying tinkering, i can't recommend buildable tanks highly enough. Even if you prefer pre made coils, just knowing you'll always be able to make do is worth something in and of itself. :)

The Aegis seems like a very nice mod. I've also been tempted a bit by the Zeus, just taking a break from direct lung, and hopping along at a measly 13-15W MTL.

My new crack:
IMG_20180805_161952.jpg

Blast from the past.
A sweet tastey grape I puff on as a reward for passing tests. Using the watt adjustment where I found a setting that mimics a smear of grape jelly on my tongue without an actual wet hit. Mmmmmm.

My brother bought a zeus and some kind of stainless top loader. He gave me his former crack pipe and some sauce that tastes like the chocolate milk at the bottom of a bowl of cocoa puffs cereal.
A simple setup that some have called 'legacy'.

At 9am I set my pack of smokes out in the nastiest, hottest part of my back yard. It was already up to the middle 80's at that point. By ten my brain was telling my body 'just one'. My body told my brain "are you kidding? It's friggin' roasting out there". I finally caved at 11.... well kinda. Noticing the lawn was in need of a haircut I did that instead. At 2 I finally gave in and had 2. Not standing around looking all stupid, I found busy work to perform while enjoying a couple of cigs outside. At 4:30 they are still outside. I'm inside. Day 2 of a pack that would ordinarily have been empty by noon yesterday.

Tomorrows test will be a 3 hour trek to the beach for work. The test will be placing the pack in the rear seat where I have to pull over to grab one. Of course the tobacco flavored pod will be placed where the pack normally rides.

I tried a credit card device with nicotine salt and 1-1/4 ohms. 35ml gave me a jolt. By sundown my smoking was nill, but I was feeling asthsmatic. Today I gave it to my brother. Nice thought but not for me.

I can tell that smoking and vaping is like smoking with a patch on and chewing nicotine gum. Yet for me I'm changing habits, watching for triggers and vaping when it gets tough.

Folks that vape tell me how many bottles of sauce they go through in a week and how many times a day they charge their device. I used 3ml of tobacco flavor in a Cue brand pod in two weeks and charged it twice. So it aint like wearing a patch and smoking. It's more like taking a couple of drags off a vapor a couple of times an hour instead of smoking.

I found the Cue too harsh. But I could reccomend it to folks who want to quit cold turkey but just need an attitude adjustment a couple of times a day. I like a Penguin by JoyeTech.

Little by little I want my brain to equate a cigarette as torture and a puff from a vape as the new pollution. I'm also changing habits that my brain equates as ideal times to smoke. I've already licked the hardest for me.... after a meal. In the past when I quit cold turkey those were the hardest times. The coffee habit will be the next to go and after those two, idle time and internet time will be on the list.

As i type this before leaving for work, i am vaping as i read..................i would not be smoking in the house. So this would have been typed outside(probably by phone, auto un-correcting most words in the process).

If i watch some netflix, i vape, i could not or would not smoke in the house. I also did not like smoke in my car, but i vape. After a few months you do get a slight film.................window cleaner sorts that out!.

What ever works mr fixer, no rules, just what works:)

Oh another thought(thats all it is) The money saved just in the last week, treat yourself to something that you would not have had the free'd up money for. Little treat, be it shoes, flashlight....................or even a new mod. It can feel like the savings are not as expected at 1st, this is due to all trial and error with mods and tanks. Once that part calms down and happy with a couple, treat yourself to something you may not have done. You deserve it!

My savings have become an investment in future savings. I'll be in the red for a few weeks. But the investment will pay off in big savings later. At a local shop near my work their sampler setup is one I like. A Sigeli(?) E1 box. I'll use other tanks. I like their yellow box.

Todays test passed with flying colors. No cigarettes all the way to work. I puffed on a couple after arriving. Yet what was once a ten cig period was zero today. Anytime I wanted one I'd crack the window and get that awful roaring whine sound going and then decide a quiet vape was better than a noisy cigarette.

I also took it easy on the vape. Long term goal is to stop using nicotine altogether.... so I also cut out chocolate from my diet right now, just in case the studies are correct. It's inconclusive but some studies suggest chocolate has nicotine and it's certain to have caffiene.
