This might be a stupid question but the heatsink reminded me to ask. Why do our LED flashlights emit so much heat. I thought LEDs were supposed to run cool. In fact the 100 watt bulbs I have installed in my ceiling can light fixtures are completely cool to the touch. Why such a difference between applications.

Behind those 100 watt bulbs is a heat sink drawing the heat away from the emitter.

Also I believe size comes in to play. Look at that bulb in your ceiling fan and look at the led in a flashlight. Lot more area on the bulb.i think this has an effect.

A chemical reaction occurs that causes light to occur.

Kinda like vinegar and baking soda combined causes a foamy substance to occur.

Heat is generated from the chemical reaction.
