Has anyone measured the CRI of the typical HID lamp? I am guessing due to the way the light is generated, it should be rather high, but what do I know.

Yes. Both my vehicles have 6000K HID lamps in projectors and both measure between 77 and 79 CRI. Many Short Arc lamps by contrast are in the very high 90's in CRI. The automotive HID lamps lack almost all RED in the spectrum. My meter reads zero RED in both my applications.
