I just got a biker's catalogue with the picture of Cateye HL-EL500.
It is called Power Opticube. One LED (I suppose 1W Luxeon), wide beam, 30 hours runtime on 4xAA battery.
Anybody heard of it? I still have not found it on Cateye's website.

yepp, reads like it, but unfortunately the data is incomplete as usual AND the light is not yet available.

How do you mean by incomplete? I understand its misleading, stating 30 hour runtimes on 4 AA's. Wonder if that means from the time you put the batteries in to the time the front of the unit stops glowing alltogether.

So that makes two commercially available 1W LED bike lights so far, the Cateye and the Smart 1W (sold as Planetbike Super Spot in the US).

Too bad neither of these lights have a flashing lightmode, that would be a real plus.

Holy Cow! A flashing Luxeon-powered bike headlight??? That would work only in a very brightly lit urban area. Where I live (totally dark at night) it would give me epileptic fits!

BTW, has anyone bought this Cateye yet? I'm curious to know if the reflector has side spill to the left and right.

It looks a bit like a Dental light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Actually, if you check catalogs that sell bike stuff. There are a few models with luxeon stars out right now. They are selling from 29.99-49.00

False alarm. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The bike shop said they had them in stock, but I found an HL500 waiting for me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

Sorry Bernhard, we'll have to wait a little longer. I did see a couple of other brands using Luxeon LED's (what Fusion said).

CatEye moves like a glacier, but they seem to have very professional products. I had a 2C incan, however, that was always plagued by flickering. They're about 18 months behind the bleeding-edge. Keep us up to date, Wasabe!!

I had 2 HL EL-300 mounted on my bike and although it had some reasonable throw the side-spill and power begs to be appreciated. Can't wait to replace them both with the HL EL-500.

They are available now but for over $100 bucks! Yikes! What a ripoff! Why not just buy an UK eLED and ductape it to your handlebars?

for your reading pleasure here are links to review from a bike geek site.

EL500 review with light measurements
and
Mini review compared to EL300

******* EDIT *******

I am using this now:

... and I am very happy. It is sturdy and accepts every cool light I want to use ... and I have a light with me that way, too.
And it costs only a few bucks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It is a TwoFish BikeBlock
look:

I forgot where I ordered it, but the cost was mostly caused by the intl. shipping because of course this marvel isn't available in giood old Europe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
Got the tip from turbodog in another thread, and so far it works great.

Re: Luxeon 1W? New Cateye EL500 in a bike catalogu

I was just looking at one of those to replace the rubberband im currently using /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

How well does it hold the light in place while actually cycling? Does it shift at all?
Im tired of constantly having to adjust the aim on my current setup.

Only place ive found that sells it is Mud, sweat and gears Inc

FWIW, the Planet Bike 1W can be had for $29.99. Don't know how they compare though.
