I have a Surefire Z3 Combat Light that I purchased brand new circa 2001. It has no modifications. I would like to get your opinions regarding upgrades such as LED, batteries, etc.

Thanks!

There are a few upgrade options available. My choice would be something from Lumens Factory. You can do LED or keep it incandescent. For batteries I suggest 2 17500 rechargeable instead of 3x123 primaries. That's what i use in my M3 anyway....

Just wanted to chime in and say that's a really cool flashlight. I wish I had kept my vintage Surefires. There are many options for upgrades. My own preference would be something from Malkoff Devices.

Regarding the batteries, I'm curious about the brand as well. Sometimes 2x17500 are a bit longer than 3xCR123. I've had fitment issues with 17500's in two other lights that were designed for three primaries. Neither was a Surefire, though.

They have been coming out with some 16650 cells recently which have more energy storage capacity than 17670 cells. I do not know if any recent 16500 cells outperform their 17500 cell counterparts, but it might be worth it to do some searches on the web, to see if that is also true.

I do have Enercig 16500IMR in my M3 (not Z3 though) and it can power up some of the high power drop ins without a problem. Only downsize is 800mah capacity :(

There are some AW17500 around and they fit perfect in my Z3.
