1xAA and under 3", the Maratac. Those two and under $40? None that I know of currently. The Maratac is damn compact, and the Ti model is under $50. If you don't mind stepping up length a quarter or half inch there are a few options the nicest of which is probably the Lumintop Tool AA 2.0 at usually $20 or so and about 3.5" with a clicky switch.

The Utorch UT01 is 3.25".

The Zebralight SC52w is 3", but it's about $60.

The Wuben E05 is 3.5".

I have a DQG Tiny AA that is 2 and 5/8". I think that's the shortest I have. I prefer the Zebralight SC52/53, though they're more expensive.

Oh, I also have a L3 Illumination L10 (I think) that is about the same size as the DQG, and only about $20 IIRC. Not sure if they still make them, though.

The L10 is reputed to be considerably more delicate than the Maratac though

The Fenix e12 is the smallest AA I've seen in person and it's still about 3.5 inches long. I think you will have trouble finding many options that are 3 inches or less.
