fixing a Jetbeam SF-R28 side switch

The side switch on my Jetbeam SF-R28 came off tonight. I can send a picture if that helps, but this is the gray rubber mode selector switch on the side of the light.
When I try to push it back in place, it doesn't seat evenly and no matter how hard I push it, it cannot actually actuate the mode selector. I can poke the mode selector with a pencil and change the mode, so nothing electronic is broken.

Has anybody had this problem? How can I get the side switch to work again? It must be something simple I'm not thinking of.

It's weird because on the back of the gray rubber buttion, the little knob has three radiating protrusions (like a radiation symbol), but there is nothing to receive them. Maybe I am missing a tiny part that got lost?

I have tried for a literal hour and the button won't properly seat back where it came from. This ain't my model, but that's the gray button the gloved thumb is on.
