I have been thinking about this a little bit an want your guys and gals opinion.
They are both potted and tough as nails but my thinking is the old school M60 with that thick built in Tir has the nod.plus the ability to put another lens over it as well.We have probably all see the video of elzetta pounding nails with the M60. Think you could do that with the 61?

Oh ya they can but they have very different design. The old M60 used a solid tir kind of optic. Not a reflector.

I see. I'm here to learn, so I'll start taking notes.

I'm learning as well! Just found a cross section of a current M61! I knew it is a beefy unit but had no idea how strong it is. Look at the thickness of that reflector.

Dang that's a beast! I've not seen that before thanks for posting it up

Holy hell ya! As I say I had no clue it was built that tough.I was under the impression that the reflector was quite thin. WRONG!!! Bless good old GENE 😁

I do not have a lot to add regarding the durability of the M60 versus the M61 specifically but I've REALLY used my Malkoff lights (well most of them). They are tough as nails. And when I had a problem, Gene sent me a new one even though I told him I'm rough on them.

There's just something about the looks of the optic on the M60...looks like jewelry.

They're both tough, but I've always favored the M60 beam profile if you can get a good one. Some aren't concentric and/or very ringy.

I have seen a couple of the M60 optics pop out - there are a couple dabs of bonding agent holding them in. In fact, I have an older M30 (a friends' dropin) that I'm thinking to send back to GM for that minor repair, when I can get around to it. :p
I know that repair would be easy to do myself, but it would be cool if he got an upgrade to the M31, was my only thought ...

So my vote goes to the M61. The add'l aspect is that a single cell is more robust than a cell stack, and the M60 runs at only ~80% on a single LiIon.

M61 gets my vote.

Am I wrong, or does Gene still use optics in a lot of his lights? Like the TIR throwers, and the Super Hound Dog and the V6WC? Although I am not sure if the V6WC uses a reflector with a frosted optic covering that, or if it uses a TIR with a frosted optic over it.

He does in his throw drop ins. M61T M91T. Stuff like that. But all his M61's and M 31's all use a reflector.

I have an M60T and the beam is way way less smooth than the M61. Tougher? I don't know which is tougher, but I do know either would likely withstand being at the wrong place at the wrong time when a hand grenade explodes. Good enough.
