what is used to provide thermal conductivity to the star?

is it a better junction than Artic silver epoxy or alumina

if so then mounting the star using artic sillver paste and mechanical mounting would provide a better path.

well, any input appreciated...

Direct mounting the emitter would be better. Look at the datasheets. There's 3-5C/W of extra thermal resistance in the star configuration vs. the emitter. Mechanicallly mounting the star is good for ease of assembly, and making the assembly non-permanent.
