I KNOW that this is careless, and probably a bit hypocritical but....

NEW 27 Hour, 25 Minute record set for the New York to Los Angeles "Cannonball" run from the Red Ball garage in Manhattan to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach.

Not that I would know anything about that but Burt would be proud...

Large congratulations to Arne Toman, Doug Tabbutt and their "spotter" Berkeley Chadwick!

This, over the course of a total 2825 miles wherein the alternating team of Toman and Tabbutt were able to maintain an overall average speed of 103 mph. This included fuel stops that totaled 22.5 minutes in total.

NOT my video:

I made it from one end to the other of a Wal Mart super center in 4.33 minutes.
More amazing was that I left without buying any flashlights. Did score some batteries though.

I can't imagine being on my "A" game for that long behind the wheel. I've spent my share of time above 100 mph on public roads (allegedly) and the concentration needed is pretty intense. Never mind AVERAGING that speed for a day plus...

I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel
There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
It's my baby calling, says "I need you here"
And it's a half past four and I'm shifting gear

The radio is playing some forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Comin' on Strong"
The road has got me hypnotized
And I'm speeding into a new sunrise

No more speed, I'm almost there
Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care
Last car to pass, here I go

And the line of cars goes down real slow
And the radio played that forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"
And the newsman sang his same song
