Pocket Power - Using Flashlights for Creative Nature Photography

A small flashlight should be standard equipment in every nature photographer's photo bag. Not only are flashlights useful in emergencies and have hundreds of uses, but they can also supply us with the most necessary ingredient in photography – light. If you haven't yet tried using a flashlight to add an accent of light to your imagery, then now is the time to try. Flashlights have gotten smaller, and more powerful than ever. Here are a few pocket lights I like and some images that have been created using them...

Hello Yclo,

Great article.

I remember setting the camera up on a tripod at night, locking the shutter open, and running around with a flashlight painting various things.

The results were a bit strange at times, but after a while some decent results could be had.

At work, I have often used a flashlight to highlight the area of interest.

LED's with their white color offer a whole new world of light balance. The world seems to have too high a contrast ratio for the camera to record.
