Not sure why but I want one of these old monsters lol. Keeping it incandescent of course what bulbs are out there that I can run in these and get the most output/throw.

They used PR20 bulbs, but a KPR118 will work.

Look for one with a shoulder strap included if you can. Makes carrying much easier.

    An argon PR20 stock type

The one like a Maglite 7D used once krypton was available.

Funny thing, today I fired up a 1960's 3D big head Sportsman. It has an original equipment argon bulb. Not very bright but the big ole head makes the spot throw light a long ways. The 7D should be impressive.

Thank you sir. Yes the ones with the straps are the ones I was looking at. Still thinking about it. They kinda just caught my eye.

We have similar tastes. I’ve been eyeballing them pretty hard. I have several different sizes of Sportsman but have never picked up the big boy

Sportsman were cop lights before the alluminum sprinkler pipe flashlight was invented.

If you look at old Dirty Harry movies you will see them. I forget which one it was, perhaps the first one but anyway there was a scene where Eastwood was shining a 3D on a lock and you could see a dent in the head. The subliminal there was that the dent was probably where ole Dirty Harry had bashed some punk into submission or something.

The Dog House Supply search and rescue light had an even bigger head with a super shiney reflector. Like a mirror that one had. Nowhere near as available as the Rayovac but a real good thrower.

Haha yes it is. I was hoping you wouldn’t see it on that other site for that price. I jumped on it. It’s so funny My wife’s cat knocked one of my old Ray-O-Vac off the mantel and I started telling her about the huge 7D version then your thread was posted.

A night shift somewhere in the US in the 1960's:

Two policemen are sharing a story about a perp that the search and rescue captain caught earlier that evening when both see movement some 100 yards away in a dimly lit alley. Officer 1 pulls out his 3D Captain and shines it. "Is that a dog?" Officer two pulls out a 4D Sportsman and says "is it a cat?" About that time the search and rescue captain walks up with his 7D Sportsman and shines it. "Fellows as you can now clearly see, that's a rat the size of a labrador".

The throw is amazing. Though those old gigantic lights clearly light up an object farther than the normal sized incan lights. That is the charm of those big boys. First time I lit my 7D Dog Supply House 7D and aimed it 500 feet away it made me giggle.

It's the one on the left.
Right is a Bright Star 10D from the 1930's. Middle left is a 3+3 Dog House Supply House from the 1950's. Middle right a 3D Sportsman from the 1960's.

Ya I know. Not much info on them. Kinda pricey I think. But not as expensive as buying 7-D cells all the time. Gene from Malkoff would know.

I got some batteries and threw in it. It’s actually a pretty beam and it throws decently. No brightness to speak of, of course. I love it.

    Food for thought:

    Before

    500 feet

    100 foot tall tree

Before (there's a white van you can't see)

After 1000 feet. See the van now.

    That was a 7D with a KPR 118 (7D maglite Krypton)
