two side by side 175 lumen emitters - call it 350 lumens?

These two lights are LED bicycle tail lights. A newer model, the Hypershot 350, has two 175 lumen emitters side by side (over under) and they call it 350 lumens. Is that correct? Isn't that like taping two 500 lumen flashlights together and calling it 1000 lumens?

That's not how it works?

It sounds correct. You have to remember that lighting can be dispersed or focused and lanterns tend to be mostly flood and the lumens are definitely valid while flashlights tend to be more throwy. When you are trying to throw light at distances you have to both have enough lumens and a decent focusing system. A tail light probably is a compromise of flood and throw as you have to be able to see it at wide angles so in a sense it is "flooding" light over a wide area and also throwing light at a distance more directly behind it too. Having 2 sources of light to double the output is probably safer than one as if one does burn out you have a backup light source as in a rear tail light often they aren't checked constantly and can be out while headlights are usually easier to tell when they are out.

That is correct. I have the Hypershot 350, excellent light so far, but be aware, not all modes are 350 lumens.

Comparing the dual LED 350 to the single LED 150, the 350 looks to be about what one would expect from a 200 lumen difference.
