Any flashaholic knows that an 18650 cell is 18mm diameter and 650mm long.

Apparently, same rules apply to coin cells.

2016: 20mm dia 16mm long/tall
2032: twice as long
etc..

An 18650 is 65.0mm long. 650mm is a bit longer than 10 D-cells, and a bit big to fit in a pocket or on a belt.

I do wish the market would stop embracing the shorter cells - they're less efficient in terms of density, have lower overall capacity, and generally cost the same per unit as the tallest cell per diameter.

There is also 2025 cells. All the 20XX are the same diameter (20mm) but differing thicknesses.
Coin cells likely will always be around as they are lithium and good for backup in electronics. I grew up with clock radios with 9v batteries for backup and after having to replace 2 batteries in a year costing me about $3 each I decided the next clock radio would take either AAs or coin cells. AAs and 9V batteries in lithium are expensive while coin cells can be sourced for $1 each or less and just don't leak.

AFAIK the last 0 indicates it's a cylindrical cell.

My understanding is that current standard battery nomenclature uses "R" for round cell, and "P" for any other shape.

Although there are certain specific exceptions, the height is generally included in the numerical portion in tenths of a millimeter.

For example, an "RCR2" battery may also be referred to as ICR15266 (and is a round cell)

There are lots of others around such as CR1616, 1620, 927 and larger/thicker ones such as 2430 and 2450.

Smallest I've seen so far is CR1009 (IIRC) which is smaller than a dime. CR1025 appears more common.

I think I had an 829 or something like that in a halloween blinky magnet it was about the size of an AG4 I think.
