[h=1]In Flanders Fields[/h]
John McCrae - 1872-1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Even tho I am from Canada, I have great respect for those that looked beyond themselves and gave everything to further the cause of freedom. May we work hard to preserve it.

a friend sent this to me:

Monday will be the most expensive holiday on the calendar

Every hot dog, every burger, every spin around the lake, or drink with friends and family...

is a debt

purchased by others

This is not about all who've served...

that day comes in the fall

This one is in honor of those who paid in life and blood

whose moms never saw them again

whose dads wept in private

whose husbands or wives raised kids alone

and whose kids only remembered them from pictures

This isn't simply a day off

This is a day to remember - that others paid for every free breath you ever get to take.

Freedom isn't free

Last night, perhaps all day, PBS presented a nice Memorial Day concert, lasting a few hours. A number of award winning actors, each spoke in the first person, of a service person's perception, and recollection of his/her participation in whichever war they were in. Each soliloquy was accompanied by snap shot photographs. Interspersed were meaningful songs, sung by other well known artists.

Very nicely done. Much more meaningful, than watching a bunch of fireworks with music in the back ground.

My embroidered Stars & Stripes is mounted off a large tree about 12' off the ground,, it stays up fully 24/7 until I retire it respectfully at an American Legion Post.
About 10 years ago started mounting it this way; off an old tree having a meaningful grounded effect.

But this is certainly not about me & that's why we never forget.
